Mine was almost 50 years go,for an assistant in a bakers.I quite liked the job, except when putting cream cakes in a bag and the customer would moan if cream got on to the paper bag (no boxes in those days ).

I remember the interview.Asked how old I was I lied and said I was 14.When they found out I was actually only 13 it was the end of that job, they weren't allowed to employ a 13 year old for as many hours as they needed. But it was fun while it lasted !
  • Saturday job at Boots back in 1996 - I had to do a Maths and English test additionally to a face-to-face interview

Not my first interview, but my funniest. I went for an interview in 2002 and was given an "isometric test" to see whether I was "the right stuff" for a job. the answers were colour coded red, blue, yellow and green (multiple choice obviously). It took me three questions to realise what was going on, that a certain colour was what this particular role required, so I ticked all the correctly coloured boxes, with a few "wrong" ones so it was more believable. The interviewer (company principal) commended me on my swiftness, told me I was the ideal candidate and offered me the job. She added, "it's a good thing you are not a Gemini, I couldn't have given you the job". I told her I am a Gemini, 24th May. She was flabbergasted, but couldn't take back the job offer. I thought she was so silly, I never spoke with her again (and in the meantime got a different job, the one I'm in now, with a 10% higher salary).

About 1985, it was the only interview I've ever been to, every other job I was asked to take the job being offered.

It was as Transport planner for Great Universal. Just a bit of a chat type interview, didn't get it anyway.

I don't get all these monumentally stupid interview techniques they have for the more basic jobs; does the person you are interviewing look OK, that's it. I have a chat with my drivers and that's about it. 90% of the time I've been right.

Does being a papergirl count? If not then the local Spar for a Sunday job when I was 14!

On a slightly different note, this has prompted me to remember an interview that I conducted for a trainee hairdresser, back in the 70s.My first employee had to leave as she developed a bad skin condition.I interviewed 2 school leavers. The first one actually brought her mother with her,and instead of me asking most of the questions,I felt like I was the one being interviewed ! The second came on her own, keen as mustard and came across as natural and friendly.

You can guess which one got the job ! She turned out to be hard working and trustworthy ,and we are still in touch to this day as friends, even though I had to give up my business 30 years ago.

Mc Donalds, when I was 16

I was sat in the eating area waiting, and a girl came up to me and asked if I was there for interview, I said I was, so she said ‘if they ask this, say this’ (cant remember what it was) anyway I did, in hindsight was probably the wrong thing, and I didn’t get the job

Probably a blessing in disguise, I then joined the ranks of waitrose, obviously a much more prestigious career path for a 16 year old part timer

Great idea if you don't actually want the job.Or,if your mother came across better than you she might get offered the job instead :D
