Car Collection and delivery Insurance

Options
If someone wanted to set up a part time side line business using a car trailer to collect and deliver cars for people what type of insurance would they need to ask for to ensure that the cars being transported are insured in case of damage/accident.

Would it be goods in transit?

The vehicle being used to tow the trailer is already insured its just ensuring the customers cars are covered.

I have rang a few insurance companies who cover the motor trade and they dont want to know or don't seem to understand what I am asking for.

If anyone has any knowledge of this or can point me in the right direction I would be grateful

Is it insured for that business though? Motor Trade tends to push premiums up.

Whats the gross train weight? Tacho fitted?

When did you pass tour driving test? Whats your towing limit?

Does your day job involve driving?

    More info needed.

When I used to have the displeasure of handling Road Risk Policies, I used to place this type of business with Roadrunner. One of the Underwriters they used (RSA I think) included vehicle in transit cover.

Ring them and explain exactly what you're doing and ask for a quote.

As I mentioned in another forum you asked this question, avoid Tradex at all costs...

    Talk to http://www.aplan.co.uk/
    At the Luton commercial desk.
As mentioned explain what you are looking to actually do.
You will find that as you are entering Motor Trade territory, the premiums will be much higher than a more conventional goods delivery service.

  • You might struggle to get this on a standalone policy. Why not add it to the towing vehicles cover?

I wonder if their towing vehicles cover is their own private policy which just gives 3rd party cover for the trailer?

Beware moving your no claims to a trade policy you may not be able to transfer it back to a private one.

What you will also need to consider, if you want to be as precise in obeying motor related laws.

Simple things, such as the condition of the vehicle when collecting/delivering it, while it's on the public highway....the few minutes it may be on it, from your ramp, before it's on private property... as YOU will be in control of a motor vehicle, YOU are responsible for it's roadworthiness...tyres, light's, MoT, jagged edges from body damage, causing a hazard to others or damage to the road surface, spilt fluids that run from faulty components and get on Mrs Passerby's pram....

All things that would never happen, of course. But just watch one or two Police Stop type programmes and consider it!!

Had to think then if i had seen any of teh shows that follow the police has stopped anyone for towing.

2 spring to mind, one towing an accident damaged and unroadworthy car with a rope, done for no insurance and tax also i think?

Another was a guy ina LandRover towing another LandRover? Asking him where his tacho was, he changed his story a few times, not working but helping. Turned out he didnt have a full licence.
