Car insurance problems

Hi folks,
A rather long story to tell, so I will cut it short.
Basically my son who has recently started driving is currently involved as a witness / victim in a court case. Obviously I can't give details as the case is ongoing right now, but it is of the nasty kind and to multiple victims over a decade. This person although we can't prove it is trying to intimidate him by continuously smashing his car windows with house bricks.
Here is the problem, my son is now looking into how much his insurance will be for next year so he can start saving. It appears no insurance company is even willing to give him a quote due to unreasonable previous window claims. There are very few offering quotes and they are all between 10,000 and believe it or not 31 thousand pounds on a cheap Ford Fiesta.
Is quite obvious his name has been blacklisted or at least flagged
He's on apprentership wages and he is only just affording the 2,500 it cost him to insure as a first time driver.
The question is does anyone know if there is some application we can make to get his name unflagged.
It just seems the lad has done the country a favour by standing up and getting one of these maggots off the streets, and should be praised, when it feels like he is being punished heavily emotionally physically and financially.
He is in absolute bits at not being able to drive next year, can anyone help please

I doubt it. It will simply be his claims history that is causing him problems. If you were an insurer, would you take an a customer who is very likely to make numerous glass claims?

Can't think of a solution other than going uninsured for glass claims but that may not be a financial solution for him.
  • Yo do have a point, no I probably wouldn't take on the rsk, however my question was is there hoops we can jump through to wipe or at least explain his claim history?
I take your point, but I would also listen as to why. The kid is a hero after what he's been through it just seems so very unfair that he won't be able to drive because of him believing in doing the right thing

You can't wipe the claims history but you can of course explain it.

I dealt with a case years ago where a policyholder had made loads of accidental damage claims on Home Insurance. A decision was made at renewal to remove accidental cover and we then had details from the Policyholder that they suffered from a disability, that meant they would occasionally damage items. The disability was confirmed by a Doctor.

A compromise was made, that we would keep the accidental cover, but would increase the premium and apply an increased excess for such claims. This was accepted by the policyholder and meant that Insurers would not have to deal with smallish claims, but if anything major happened, there would be cover. From memory, there were no further claims made.

My suggestion is to see if he can work with the current Insurers by supplying them with information about the criminal issue he was involved in, that led to these vandalism claims. Perhaps they will have a look at this, to see if a compromise can be made.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • That's a much more thoughtful answer,
Thank you very much for explaining this. So in your opinion, a compromise can be reached by talking to these people? What if we try just removing the glass cover from the comparison site results or would that make any difference being that the history would still follow him.......he's gonna be paying over the odds for years to come

Your not going to do this online. Speak to the current insurer or face to face with a local broker.

I have now ticked RSA of the list of possible companies you work for...
  • When you've put them down online have you put them as vandalism or windscreen claims? Windscreen claims shouldn't really affect his quote that much, although I've never seen a policy with more than 3. How many does he actually have? Ring a broker and explain. It may be they can just go down as glass claims. If they've been reported as vandalism though you may be looking at high premiums for a while.

Agree. It is worth seeing whether the current Insurers will help or go to a local brokers to see whether they can assist.

Not saying that Insurers will be helpful, as they are not as human as they once were. The current Insurers is the most likely option, if you can find a human working there, who is willing to at least look at it with their underwriters.

  • Another option is to buy back the claims from his existing insurer. How many windscreen claims has he made? What was paid out? If he buys these back he would still need to declare them but as 'no claim made'.
