I want to beat Santander's CC charges...

Hi folks, I'm turning to you for advice as I'm sure they'll be a few out there who can help me
A year or so ago I decided that as I had never taken out any higher purchase/loans/ cc etc that i probably would have quite an average credit rating, and as I want to buy a house in the coming years, it might be wise to take out a credit card (purely for the odd purchase, to then be paid back in full at the end of each month, such as a train ticket, just to demonstrate sensible borrowing) .
I turned to my trusted back, at the time of 11 years - Santander.
They accepted me for their 123 cc. But now as their monthly fee is changing to £3 a month, and I rarely use this card, it seems silly to stick with them. I've phoned them and told them I'll leave, and they've said there is no movement on that fee.
Before i do go ahead and cancel it, are there any cc's out there for someone in my position that would be ideal? I tried looking through the guides but they are quite specific such as best for balance transfers and best for bad credit rating but i have neither - i just want something with no monthly fee, I'm not bothered about cashback (as i rarely spend on it) purely to keep demonstrating good borrowing/ get an excellent credit rating.
Any help gratefully received!
(ps I switched my current account from them because of their new fees, 11 years and they could do nothing for me!)

Well the obvious suggestion would be to approach the bank you switched from Santander to...wouldn't it?0
