8 month old oil burner broken - seller says has to go to manufacture for investigatio

So, we ordered a new oil burner for our heating system last may, it arrived and was fitted.
It has died - well a gear in it has died - part of it sheared off meaning that the pump wasn't turning and thus, it disnae work.

So my partner contacted the seller who has said that before any refund can be made it has to go back to the burner manufacturer for investigation. It came with a 12 month warranty. We do not have the spare £250 it is for a new burner.

This will mean that we have no heating (with 2 small kids that's not ideal)

Are we within our rights to ask the seller to pay for repairs that a local heating engineer can do (these will cost near £250 as it is as that is how much it cost for them to fix the old one this one replaced! And for the SAME issue).

I have looked on the manufacturers website and they do mention the return of faulty goods....but what to do in the mean time? We could heat the house with air heaters, but that will cost money as well.

Help/Advice please for a cold Donury :(

You are within your rights to ask, they are within their rights to say no chance.

If its your only source of heating you really need a backup plan.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • we have a coal fire down stairs fan heater and 2 oil filled radiators thats it. they will add 1/3 more a month to our electricity if we have to use them. Currently house is sitting at 11 degrees and I have a very very grumpy toddler. Our house is north facing so even teh sun not heating the house

I've asked my partner to speak to CAB as we cannot be without heating for long as we live in an old property and it begins to get damp.

I'm just really !!!!ed off that we spend £250 on what is meant ot be one of the best oil burners on the market and after 8 months its broken.

Have you actually spoken to the manufacturer? They might be willing to send someone out to look at it.

Just to play devils advocate - you state that you now have 2 units from different manufacturers failed due to the same issue, could this be something your heating system is causing or something you/your partner is doing wrong to cause this failure?

As forgotmyname said, you need a better backup plan as things like this tend to happen at the worst time.

That's not exactly "no heating" is it?

Okay so it may cost to run it, but it's better than freezing surely?

To keep the fire going is about £7 a day so not affordable. Currently running fan heaters.

Have spoken to the retailer who has said that he has seen this issue in the past and that they always ask for the burner back. Keep it for 3-4 months to do investigations then say its a fault generated by the user.
He said it doesn't matter if its been owner installed or engineer installed, they will always blame user error.

Our heating system was serviced just before the new burner was installed - and the old one that was removed had had a new pump in it at a cost of £90 - not including labour! (the burner its self is £250). The engineer who serviced it and replaced the pumps said he see that a lot. But unfortunately the boiler wasn't set up to take another make of burner so we would have had to replace the whole unit which we couldn't stretch to.
The engineer also adjusted something on the boiler part - I cant remember the name, as 1-5 settings and is to do with the number of radiators and the size/type of house and to make sure that all radiators get even heat.

If electricity wasn't so expensive we would have an electric boiler fitted but we have 500ltr of oil sitting there paid for to use and no free cash to change anything.

Retailer has asked OH to write a sob story email and then said he will put pressure on Reillio to provide a new pump.

We generally don't need the heating on from April till October so when the oil is done we will look into alternatives. Local builder specialises in air source heating so will speak to him and see if we can get a loan to sort something.

This place is turning into the money pit :(

I would suspect the retailer might be liable for a consqiuental loss if your without the heater for a period of time. Ask them if they will hire you a loan heater or a temp replacement? I would'nt start speaking to manufacture as you have no claim. You do need to return the burner to the retailer. How did you pay for it?
