    TRIM?
How have you implemented this ?

    Spud,

Garbage collection should sort that for you depending on the drive, see here:

    Hi

after some advice. Friend has windows xp on her tower and it is extremely slow, so was thinking about installing linux on her tower.

    before I do.....

    here are her specs

she currently has on her tower:

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3
    Intel R
    Celeron CPU 2.66 GHz
2.66 GHz 1.99 GB of Ram

now will it be feasible to install linux on this tower, will it be faster and is the memory sufficent?

    What Motherboard is in there?
You could go mad and spend a fiver on a Core2Duo CPU for her. :)

    Have a look at Zorin.

I've used it to move several people from XP to Linux.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

    I know about TRIM.
I was interested if he/she knew what TRIM actually is, and what they have done about it as they are using an OS where it is not built in.:)
    Move along, nothing to see.

+1, one of the best I've found for low powered ex XP machines.

Sitting here tying this on a machine not that dissimilar to yours.
    1.9GiB of memory.
3GHz Intel Pentium D dual core processor
    155GB hard drive.

It was an old office machine that the other half's office ditched when they upgraded from XP.

Quite happily running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Even got Microsoft Office 10 (well, Word, Excel and Powerpoint) running under Wine (though they crash if you try to print).

There's an even wimpier laptop running the same version in the next room - it's working as a print server (for this Linux box, but !!!!!!ed if I can get the settings right for the Windows laptop downstairs).

    I've got a spare Dell Optiplex 2.8GHz P4, 1.25 GB ram, dual booting XP/ Mint 16 Cinnamon.
It's fine for email and browsing.
