Getting rid of User Name & Password box when I log on to Windows

You haven't lost anything except the short cuts, the actual programmes will still be there. It is confusing me what you actually have as your initial post was to get rid of the log-in box, which you appear to have done but then you say "now when I log in .." It sounds like you might have created a new user profile, hence the different looking desktop. Starting from a cold boot, i.e. after having been shut down, switch on and observe EXACTLY what comes up on screen and make a note of it. If you can post on here from a separate system (phone/table/laptop) do that whilst keeping your main machine running.
Oh and what is "the island"?
Isn't 'the island' one of the desktop pictures rather than a screensaver?
Not the first time I've seen that confusion on here.
OP what is your usual user name?
Try putting that in the box which says 'Administrator' and then your password if you have one, otherwise just hit 'enter'.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Yeah your right. I think it's my screensaver.
All the stuff disappeared when I put in control passwords2. I unchecked the box and saved but when I went back in I was confused, who knows what else I did. God knows what I've done. I need to get back to the usual screen after starting up.
It used to come up with username: xp and password which was blank. I just used to press return and it went to my usual screen.0 -
Have you actually tried what I suggested?Middle_Sister wrote: »Yeah your right. I think it's my screensaver.

If I remember rightly from my XP days, if you click in the username box, it used to drop down and show all the user names that had been created. Try that and report back.0

Yup, it's been a while, although still occasionally use it.
I'm guessing that it's a Dell, with 'Administrator' as primary account, and a secondary user (hence ref to xp?) set up on first use?
OP, Why can't you use the Administrator account and then 'control userpasswords2' and put the tick back.It used to come up with username: xp and password which was blank. I just used to press return and it went to my usual screen.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I tossed & turned all last night worrying about what I'd done and when my husband brought me a cup of tea this morning he said, "I got a different message when I started up the computer this morning saying Administrator in the box so I just changed it to xp and its working fine now".
Thanks to everyone for your help. I'm not going to touch another thing. I'm lethal.0 -
So you are both sharing one user account? Set up yourself with a separate user account without admin rights and you can then do no damage to the admin account-much less lethal.
But glad to hear you are using Chrome rather than IE if running on XP.No free lunch, and no free laptop
