Strange SPAM issue.

I posted a little while back regarding a friend with severe spam issues, 20+ emails every day, some with obscure urls (HEX) which had me stumped.
I created new email addresses for them and transferred stuff over bit by bit as they got emails from places they had forgotten about.
Oddly when i transferred their facebook email over to a new address the spam almost stopped. The very next day instead of 20+ there were just 3, some days no spam mail at all since?
Oddly though some emails had their real name which they do not use on facebook.
I hate puzzling mysteries...
