    It's a Renault Laguna estate 2003. I think the engine is 2ltr.

He managed to find a video on YouTube about how to siphon fuel without getting a mouth full of diesel, and tried that. The tube went in fine, but for some reason he can't get much out at all so he's decided he's going to drive it to a local garage for advice.

Ebe Scrooge, thanks for the tip about adding some 2-stroke oil. It's not the first time he's misfuelled but this is the largest amount. Hopefully that'll help reduce the damage.

I appreciate all the advice about the responsible way to deal with this. If it was me, there'd be no question over it but he's never been the type to do the sensible thing regarding car care or maintenance. It amazes me that his car still runs in general.

Where does he plan on draining the fuel to?

Probably loads of empty bottles in his recycling box/bin :)
  • Not to mention, he'll need to get past the almost-inevitable anti-syphon restriction in the filler neck.

Just use a small diameter pipe. Slow but works.

May I point you to this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5xhPAundL4

My suggestion is if you don't want to spend any money - dilute the petrol with as much diesel as you can fit in and continue to run the car.

my recycling bins would permit you to drain a fuel tanker at the moment!!

  • its nowhere near as bad as putting diesel in a petrol vehicle BUT

don't drive it anywhere yet except to a filling station
    fill it up with diesel
put in a cupful of 2 stroke oil as advised
leave the filler cap off which will allow some of the petrol to evaporate
    don't drive over 50mph or 2500 rpm
top up with diesel every 100 miles or so
once you've done 500 miles it should be ok
put the filler cap back on

Drive it until the petrol is nearly empty and fill up on diesel. Mixing fuel doesn't affect older cars so much compared to newer models. Also try diluting the petrol with diesel and drive happily. The wifey years ago did it frequently but the car drove fine and passed all yearly test.

no, fill it up with diesel first or it will probably break down

    OP

Absolutely DO NOT follow this advice about leaving fuel caps off. Fuel sloshing around in the tank can and does make its way out of the filler cap, and fuel spills DO kill people, particularly cyclists and motorcyclists.

This is utterly irresponsible, not to mention the fact it could land you in court.

Not always, it doesn't. Plenty of vehicles have a mesh restrictor in the fuel filler neck.
