Plastering Quotes

Options
Me and my wife have recently just bought our first house. We've got some artex ceilings that we want getting rid of. Depth of artex is nothing major at all. House was built in 1999 so no issues with asbestos.

For the work, we've asked for the artext to be skimmed, plasterboarded over and skim finished. We've also asked for coving to be put up in the rooms.

The difference between the cheapest and the most expensive quote is £1000! Now, the cheapest man isn't VAT registered, but the most expensive one is. A third quote we had we just a tad lower than the most expensive quote received.

I'm puzzled as to why such a huge difference for the same job. I am also now dubious as to how good a job the cheaper non-vat registered bloke will be.

We're based in the east midlands, as a rough idea, can anyone give a rough cost for the job based on the total area to be covered for plastering (approx 70m2)?

Worth noting that the two dear quotes were from tradesmen on the local council trusted traders website, whereas the cheaper one was just via a websearch, with good reviews on mybuilder.com (admittedly not the most reliable source). We have a 4th plasterer coming out tonight to quote.

Thoughts and comments welcome and much appreciated!

Many thanks!

  • This is worth what is worth to you and at the end of the day unless you hear from someone else that the work they do is good you will be taking other peoples word for it that you do not know.

I have always had work done from people that are recommended to me by friends or family and would not consider using any council listed ones, I may however look at the website ones if there's enough good reviews on them, I would start them in a small room first and if happy then carry on.

I know the above conflicts slightly but if I had no recommendations then it would suffice.
  • I can't tell you whether the quotes are right because you didn't provide any figures apart from the £1k difference.

When it comes to choosing your builder, plasterer or any other tradesmen, it's best to go with your gut and pay attention to how they talk (if you found them online). If they're confident and know what they're doing, that could be a good sign.

I've recently stumbled upon this article online on how to vet a builder. Hope it helps - howtomanageyourbuilder.co.uk/advice-tips/how-to-vet-a-builder-yourself
  • Just as an aside, I had an artex ceiling in my living room so the plasterer just skimmed straight over it (i think they cover the artex with some sort of bonding) and the finish is excellent.

Just seems a bit of a faff skimming it, then plasterboarding and then skimming again.

I am in the West Mids and it was a friend of a friend who did it for £150
