Keeping Knobs and Knockers Clean

Just painting the front door so I removed all the brass door furniture which had really deteriorated and attacked it with brasso and fine steel wool.
All the brass work now looks great but of course the remnants of whatever lacquer was left on has now been removed.
Anyone know of any spray on??? lacquer or something similar that can be applied to prevent tarnishing? The door is north facing so gets the worst of the weather in the winter.
Thanks
