WageDay Advance scam letter?

I got home today to a letter from them, well supposedly. I'm not sure where to go for advice.

Apparently they tried to collect my loan payment, which failed and has now also incurred a default charge.

Thankfully I have nothing to do with them or any similar kind of company. The number seems fake too, 0333 011 0688. I looked up the company name, and there is a proper looking company with a different number (0333 006 2000). I called them up, and they confirmed that there is an account in my name and address.

So now I'm thoroughly confused,it feels like phishing/fake letter and normally I'd dismiss it on that basis. But if that's the case, I'm unsure what seems to be the proper company said that there is a valid account for me. They wouldn't give me any more info though without going through security etc, so I refused to give them anything which they hadn't already mentioned on the letter, basically my name, address, and supposed account number.

I called Experian, they said there was no record of any search or similar from any company like that on my file.

Has anyone had the same letter? Any other soudn advice?

I'll be contacting Action Fraud in the morning.

That is a valid number for Wage Day Advance collections team. Not sure why you think it is fake? Call them up and advise them it is not your debt.

I'd suggest you take a look at Noddle (Callcredit) and Clearscore (Equifax) too to see if they've reported to either of those credit agencies.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    This is fairly basic...

If a company says a loan has been taken out in your name and you are adamant that you have not applied for said loan then someone has committed fraud or the company has made a mistake.

You need to report the possible fraudulent act to the police, get a crime reference number and then send this to the company and ask them to investigate it as fraud.

I don't get why you haven't done this already.
    :hello:
  • I did call the police, on 101, who advised me that they don't deal with it. They referred me to Action Fraud, however they aren't open until 9am.

I asked on here as the letter seemed questionable in its origin.

Be aware that Action Fraud won't do anything, they'll just log your details and give you a reference number. Make sure you also call the lender tomorrow, the quicker they are aware of it the quicker you'll stop being hassled for something you don't owe.

And under no circumstances should you give the lender any personal or contact details that they don't already have.
  • It's not correct that the police don't deal with it I would contact them again and if you encounter issues then ask to speak to a senior officer. A few years ago I got a letter redirected from a previous address telling me I'd not paid for my TV instalment to bright house but I called them, they faxed me a copy of the agreement which definitely wasn't mine and the police came out the following day to take a statement as it appeared it was the tenant who moved into the house after me. It's fraud - they have to investigate it
