Hi,
20 years ago I went to India and could easily find basic family run hotel rooms for 100 - 150 rupees a night.
What can I expect now?

We were in India October 2014 for a month and stayed in a variety of different places. Think one of the cheapest was a home stay in alleppey which was 700rps a night for 2 people. Bloody hard bed tho!!!!£2 Savers Club #156!
Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j0 -

You can sometimes find really cheap places: the least I have paid this year was Rs500, although I met someone staying somewhere similar who said he was paying Rs200. Also see what is available on Air BnB.
Obviously prices are a good deal higher in major cities, and in popular resorts around holidays.0 -
I have found that the standards of accommodation that I like have changed over the last 20 years. While the basics where fine when I was I penniless student, now I find I need a comfortable bed, air conditioning (when in a hot country) and modern plumbing. In India - like most of Asia - I would always spend a little more rather than go for the cheapest option.0

In 2008 and 2009 the cheapest at Gokana beach was 100 and the average around 350, nothing more than 500 and all basic Indian backpackers.0
