Atlanta / Georgia Things to see & do on a budget

Hi,
OH and I are going to Atlanta on Monday. We are spending 3 nights independently before heading to Lagrange (about 60miles south of Atlanta) to visit friends for the weekend before we head home.
I've been doing some research about how to spend our 3 'free' days and I'm getting more confused the more I investigate!

Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably cheap, but romantic hotels or inns and places to visit? We will have a car that we are picking up on Monday evening when we land - some of the city centre hotels appear to only offer valet parking at $25 per day which is a bit scary! I'm happy to do a fair bit of driving, and perhaps get out of the city centre. Stone Park looked quite nice, or maybe Macon, Augusta or Columbus?

If anyone has been to any of these places and has any recommendations it would be great to hear from you.

PS Any tips on great US shopping bargains for a soon-to-be mature student??

Can't help you with the hotels I'm afraid but I found Atlanta incredibly boring. Hubby and I were there for a week working and the only thing worth seeing in our free time was the Coca Cola museum. We spent a lot of time with some local friends and thank goodness for that or we'd have been bored to tears. Our friends did mention that Stone Mountain Park was great (tho we never visited it).

One thing I do remember though is that there are LOTS of shopping malls so you shouldn't have any problems finding things to buy!
