That's what the OP did, read my quote in the post above.

I answered the op's question: "what would you have done", as asked in the original post above.

    Your post is irrelevant.

There is nothing in PCI guidance which says you shouldn't provide card details over the phone to make a payment. This is what the pub have suggested the OP do.

I have not suggested they store the Security code. I am simply pointing out its only a three digit code which is not difficult to remember if someone had the card, had scanned all the other details and wanted to commit a fraudulent transaction.

I believe you asked if there was any difference between getting the imprint from the card and writing down the details as they requested.

I was just saying there's quite a few.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Quite a few? There's one difference you don't have the security code.

And as I have said (and you replied to) they could easily remember a three digit code if they wanted to be fraudulent.

It as an irrelevant post. You just wanted an excuse to link to the PCI website. Which was completely unnecessary as nobody believes them writing down the card number and leaving it was acceptable;)

Does nowhere have the old swipey credit card payment system anymore for when things go down? I'm sure i did that under a year ago.

Yes, plenty of places still have the swipe machine as a backup. I think you can still get one if you have a "proper" merchant account with a High Street bank. I think it's where you have one of the newer/cheaper terminal providers by third party companies (paypal etc) that all you get is a card reader. Certainly when Lancaster had it's power cuts a few weeks ago, I saw lots of businesses had dusted off their manual swipe machines so they could carry on trading. A few months ago, I ordered a carpet from a national chain and their phone lines were down, so they got the old paper swipe machine from under the counter for us to pay.
  • All sorted out now, although I have yet to receive the promised scan of the receipt.

When they called I told them that I would not be paying them over the phone as given what they had asked me to do with my card details I was not comfortable. I offered to either post a cheque or use Bacs. They chose the latter and I paid them in full.
