Public liability insurance

Morning all
Just a quick question - hopefully I can get a quick answer.
I work for a big cleaning firm, who obviously have public liability insurance cover.
What I wanted to know is if this cover would be sufficient for a fundraising idea I have had?

Some of the details -
  • The site(s) I work on are investment banks.
  • The event I am trying to organise is a boat building competition that will not be taking place on the premises I work on but close by.
  • The boats will not be people carrying vessels but made from recycled material operated by small battery operated motors.

You need to talk to the legal department of the cleaning firm. PL insurance and it's cover varies. Only they will know for definite whether your plans are covered.

I assume you will be doing this on behalf of the company? If not then the answer to cover will most probably be No.
  • The insurance your employer has is public liability insurance for cleaning. It will not cover you for anything other than you performing your occupation as instructed by them.

You can maybe look into getting your own one off event liability insurance. I did this a few years back for a party I was involved with in a hall that wanted me to get the cover.

Worth speaking to the company or brokers that arranges Insurance for the company and the building where this will take place. I have seen companies willing to offer free cover extensions for such charity events, after full info has been provided.

Arranging these events is a hassle, more so in a building that is not yours. You would need to speak to whoever manages the building you would like to use.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Thanks
I was thinking along the same lines of contacting the insurance company or rather getting my manager to do it (delegation works both ways) to find out, what our PL cover actually covers.
The event will be in a public space controlled by private landlords so will also speak to them about it also.

Sounds like you need Event Insurance. That should provide lability cover for staff and the public.

Is this fundraising idea anything to do with your employer?
  • It is my idea and being organised mostly by me, on behalf of my employer's partner charity The Prince's Trust.
If all goes well I would like to make it an annual event.

    So it's a company activity.

Shouldn't be a problem getting the company PL cover to apply but they might need to be told about it. Presumably they have a broker you (your employer) can talk to.
