Artex and woodchip

Hi,
Hoping somebody can help.

Bought my first property and although I got tremendous value for money I now have to deal with wood chip on the walls throughout and old grubby artex.

Has anyone got an idea of how much and how long it should take a professional to strip all the walls in a 3 bed property of the wood chip and make the walls ready for painting (which i would do in my own time) and also to "skim" (I think thats what its called) all the ceilings

Thanks

ahh, the old woodchip don'tcha just love it lol.

well it's very hard to say an excact timing , i've stripped woodchipped walls very easily ( although not often) and i've took ages doing the same job too.

allow 1 full day of strpping per room but be prepared for longer, your best bet is to get a quote for doing all of it and not per day as it can easily be extended longer than it needs to be.

i'm sure a plasterer will be along soon to advise you on your celings.
  • Thanks that gives me a good idea for planning purposes, it may be the case the decorator gets 2 weeks of the house to themselves then after that they'll have to work round me and the furniture.

What you have to take into account also, is that when they get the woodchip off , there will be lots of prep, as chances are plaster will have blown and crumbled, there will be cracks, holes etc.

I have never yet taken off woodchip to reveal half decent walls.

So you might have to either get some of the walls skimmed or lined.

I stripped woodchip off a couple months ago, and it was a 2 bed upstairs flat, including a lounge, long hallway, and deep stairs, also a bathroom in woodchip, it took me 6 days to strip the lot on my own, and one room and part of the hallway had two layers of woodchip, (why I will never know).

So it should take between 7-8 days to strip your house, but that is only going on how long it took me.

Im a plasterer. Depending on various things you are looking at between £100 and £150 per ceiling to skim over them.

Also B&Q do a tool called a 'paper tiger' its great for stripping paper as it puts millions of tiny holes in it so the water/steam can get in behind it.
