Parking

sorry if this is in the wrong section, but l found it kinda hard to place this in any particular forum.

now, while lm reasonably sure lm not going to get much help on this if any l thought ld should check to see if any of the laws have changed (as lve only found old pages mentioning stuff about the issue).

anywho, long story short we move to where we are now in July last year, we needed a larger place as before we were living in a 2 bed flat (we needed an extra bedroom as it was becoming an issue), however the main issue since moving here has been parking.. or lack thereof.

basically we do have a large parking area around the back, but it causes issues if we park in front of someones entrance (garden gates) and since the other side is garages, there would definitely be issues if we parked in front of them.. now while we used to have three cars (my parents and sisters) we are now down to two, which would neatly fit in front of our house.

problem is we havent been able to park out the front of our house for the last month or so, one car hasnt moved in that time and the other is owned by someone else who has two cars who always moves his second car in such a way that makes it impossible for anyone else to park there when he takes his work van..

suffice to say, while the area is nice (we like living on the outskirts of town), parking has become impossible... if we park outside of someone elses place we get more agro leaving us having to park down the road in a car park which is soon to be going pay and display :/

what are the laws on parking outside of someone elses property? and what would the area round the back of our place be considered (its technically not part of the main road) none the less our neighbour who has the first garage has used the "we were here first" card and has told us we arent to park in front of his garage because thats where his friends park (which is pretty much every day) not that he uses his garage for anything more than clutter.

Unless it's a private car park with some kind of permit system, or private land, then anybody can park any road legal vehicle anywhere it isn't explicitly barred (via yellow lines or similar markings) or causing an obstruction.

:/ thought it was going to be something along those lines.. still the car that hasnt moved in a month or so looks to be running out of tax according to the online checker..

heres to hoping they forget to extend it so we can report it..

You could check whether the cars are taxed...

Unless the roads are unadopted so belong to the residents of the properties, or other restrictions exist then you can park in front of someone's house without breaking in rule or laws. You probably won't be very popular but then you have moved into a clique and you will !!!! people of whatever you by the sounds of it.

the parking around the back, you say it causes problems when you park there, do you have access to your back garden from this area? if so would it be possible to open up the garden and use this area as parking

also you say it causes problems when you park in front of gates and garden access, are these pedestrian access or vehicle access ?

people tend to get very territorial when it comes to parking spaces and can do silly things to protected a bit of the public highway that they see as there own spot

well most areas are in front of others gates in the area around the back.. there is an area right beside our back gate where we could park if it wasnt for our neighbour complaining to the housing association when we parked there once.

basically because he own his house he has the right of way so to speak despite the fact he rents said garage and never uses it for a car (just firewood etc). and like l said his friends park there who havent been very nice when they couldnt access the area where they usually park.. its kinda annoying because we can neither park at the front or back of our house without someone complaining that they have lived here longer.

when you park in the area next to your gate are you blocking access to the garage that he rents ?

indeed, but at the same time someone is blocking our ability to get out of the gate as well meaning we have to walk round to the font gate (which has a few steps) and then walk the wheelie bin round the back to the area where the trash is picked up from..

if they are blocking your gate with their friends cars then do what they did and complain to the housing association

Personally, I would use peer pressure against the guy that is parking outside your house constantly. Park as close as you can to your house on your street - after all your car is VED'd and insured, right? So it's as entitled as anyone's to be there. If you get agro, tell them you wouldn't need to park there if the guy with a van wouldn't park in such a way that the only place left for you is elsewhere.

Parking is always a contentious issue. I used to live in a cul-de-sac and that really is a pain when someone blocks you in double parked when you need to move the car at 4am. (their faces are a picture when you knock on the door at that time, even though you offered to swap with them so that you needn't wake them up, and they said, nah).
