Recommend a rug/runner for kitchen?

Options
Hi all

I have two lovely cats who currently get let in and out by us when we are home, but this week we are going to put in a cat flap for them to come and go as they please (microchipped one).

The problem is my garden is currently bog like, and my house has cream carpets throughout! The kitchen is the only room without carpet, it is tiled. At the moment I shut door to kitchen when we let them in, and dry off their muddy paws with a towel.

Obviously this won't be possible with the cat flap! So can any of you recommend a cat rug or runner that I can put in kitchen that will definitely wipe off the majority of the mud? I'd like a long one if possible, kitchen is over 2.5m in length so we have the space.

Thanks in advance.

The rubber backed dirt trapper style are good for muddy paws. The website Splendid Pets sells a range, for cheaper than most. They do runners as well as rugs - I bought a 6' x 4' rug and a 10' x 2' runner. You can cut down to size if needed. I eventually made the runner into several smaller mats when it was no longer needed in its original location.

They're machine washable, but the large ones are awkward - I've hosed it down outside, with a bit of detergent sprinkled over, to clean before.

I use an ikea washable rug called Hulsig, absolute bargain at 9 quid! 120cm by 180cm.
Had it for about 18 months to 2 years and washed about once a month and still going strong.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • I'd be tempted to shut the kitchen door as well as I wouldn't trust a rug to prevent any paw marks on cream carpets!

I've had Watson's 'floor mats' for several years .They are available from their website,in a number of colours and sizes, including custom, which is more expensive.

Ours have been pooed, weed, sicked on ,with added spillages and mud, but are easily cleaned in the washing machine. The present one is at least five years old , is washed at least once a fortnight, but has an intact non-slip underside.

  • Thanks all for the suggestions, I shall look them up now.

As tempting as that would be I don't really want to put the litter tray in kitchen, and they love roaming the house and both have their own spots they like to sleep in so I'd feel guilty! I'm hoping as (if!) the weather improves the it will become less of an issue. We have a few days off shortly so will trial it then to see how messy it gets!

    Thanks again all

You have to make sure your rug covers ll the area your cat can walk on as they are very good at avoiding it.

I have used the ones Splendid Pets sell for many years and they are still good. However, although they dry the dog's paws I don't know of they will soft enough to clean a cat's paws

Some people use a piece of fleece bedding as it is very absorbent.
