Where to stay in Rome?

Any advice on the best areas of Rome in which to stay for a weekend break would be greatly appreciated.

I've scouted around for some hotels and found a few which look okay and are similarly priced. Would it be better and more cost effective to stay near Termini station or the Vatican in terms of getting to and from tourist attractions and restaurants? We don't mind walking (so long as it's not hours to get anywhere) but don't want to be spending a fortune on taxis to get around.

Thanks!

    hiya,

The metro in Rome in great, and everything is a train ride away. My husband and I didn't bother booking a hotel , when we got there as soon as we steped out of the train station there was loads of B&B's we just popped in and booked a room.

Make sure you take your passport to the vatican with you - they will stamp it if you ask them too! after all it is another country!

Yes you'll be fine staying in the Termini area. I'd recommend doing a search on venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance)
PM me if you want a 4% discount code.

I think it's a good idea to check out this website even if you find hotels cheaper elsewhere, as the descriptions and maps are generally better than other sites in my opinion.

    Hope that helps

PS - I'm not connected to this website in any way, and I don't gain anything from this post. I also found the discount code on another forum.
