Have you tried bleeding the living room radiator and making sure it is not turned down? If so tell Gentoo that your living room radiator isn't working and to send someone out to fix it. It might be worth buying a big rug to go over the carpet in your sitting room too.

Also you don't need to wait for EON to bring in smart meters in your area to switch, that could take up to 2020. You could have a normal meter installed to pay by direct debit before then then change to the smart meter when they are available, or even shop around for a cheaper prepayment tariff with a different supplier.

I'd forgotten I'd commented on this thread - did you ever get those warm socks? :-)

Sounds like Gentoo should be ashamed of themselves, presumably they're called that name as their properties are only suitable for penguins. No prizes for the government either for starving HAs of money and trying to sell off their properties. Do they have a Facebook page and are they on twitter?

I have a thick, lined curtain at my door, would that help? Look around for a cheap rug as mentioned above: maybe even on Freecycle? I'm off in a moment to a house extension site at the end of the road to scrounge pallets for making kindling, and there's a bit of left over Cellotex which I can use to improve the insulation in my airing cupboard... Every little helps. :-)
  • Pipes going round the external walls is not ideal, but they will still realease heat into the room. You could open up the wooden conduits and put pipe insulation around all of them. That will ensure more of the heat is retained untill it gets to the radiator.

figured i'd update the thread but unfortunately there's no happy news as of yet...

windows are still in the same condition, gentoo will not accept that they just aren't fit for purpose, and to my disappointment the flat will not be modernized until 2020, so i'm currently on the look out for a flat that has more efficient heating and insulation systems in-place

i'm still waiting for news on the smart meter from E-on too

thanks for the official response Malc, although i'm already aware of all the rewards i can get while on prepayment

    cheers

Morning K.S. Happy to help. It's good you know about the rewards etc that we offer. As I say, Smart Meter availability depends on various things like the region, strength of the mobile signal and current metering set up. Autumnella's spot on. You can ask for a conventional credit meter now and then switch to a Smart Meter once available. Doing this now won't affect your current Smart Meter registration.

Hope this helps K.S. Have a good day.

i have the same kind of curtain on my side of the living room door but it doesn't stop the entire flat from freezing through when the heating goes off at night... i've persisted with my theory that the windows are mostly the reason, though the walls freeze up too, it's all such a mess

the weather is getting warmer but some nights are almost as cold as the ones at the end of last year

no it's not ideal at all, i looked up the house the other week and it seems it was built in '71 or '72, and these radiators are the same as the ones my grandparents had some 18 years ago so it's all very old... i won't mess with what you call conduits, mice used to run along them but i disposed of them after weeks of sleepless nights, so yeh

i haven't tried bleeding the living room radiator, i think the problem is actually the hm... dial? it goes from 0 to 5 but it can't be turned off, so i think the switch underneath the dial has broke and locked the radiator into a low setting... i should get that looked at :)

    Morning K.S.

It's great you've signed up for our new Smart Pay As You Go scheme. It's early days for this project and the meters aren't available everywhere yet but glad you're able to have them.

Once installed, you'll be able to top up through a smartphone app or online whenever you like. You'll be able to pay by card and also move cash between the two meters if needed. You'll still be able to top up at shops or agents as now. If for any reason our online systems are down, you can top up by phoning us.

There are more tariffs available with Smart Pay As You Go too. All the ones on our website can be chosen like the Fixed 1 Year version 20 tariff you've gone for. As you say, there are also lower daily standing charges for customers with these meters. Have you signed up for 'Price Alerts?' If you have, we'll let you know if a new version of the tariff is released.

You'll be able to keep track of the balance on the meter in pounds and pence, hour by hour, online or through the app. You can set alerts, too, to let you know when the balance is nearing zero so you won't be caught out.

Hope this helps K.S. There's more details on our website but let me know if you need any more information. Happy to help.

i did sign up for the alerts yep, i didn't specifically choose this tariff but it did appear when i went through the process to find a better tariff and it called itself the cheapest i could get, so i trust it :) at this price i'd be daft not to... hopefully this means i can use turn my heating up a notch and end up saving money still

not the best solution, but a step in the right direction

    thanks again
