It's interesting that the ONS figures show public sector pay more than private.
I guess the problem with private sector is that it covers such a vast range of jobs that it's hard to actually speculate the difference between public and private in your own relevant field.
I know in my field (IT R&D) that private pays much better than public.
I can only guess at the lower end of the field, for example an Admin working for a private company would get paid less than if they were working for a public department.
I'd be interested to know where you are from. I know in the North West you earn a lot more in the public sector in all fields of IT than the private. Almost double in some areas.
