wow 17k. But as said, its usually reflected in prices in the area. 17k in your area may get you more than 26k in another area.

Most jobs are in retail, warehousing, care, admin...etc all low paid jobs. People live where they can walk to work and not have the expense of a car. The higher level employees that are paid more such as managers etc tend to commute in as they can afford a car and a better home.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

This is only the 2nd time in my working life that I'm earning more than the median wage.
  • Average London wage is 40k apparently.

Just wondering, as I work away from home, and want to leave my Job, although in south wales your pretty lucky if you earn 15k a year these days. I'm curious what an average salary is. I'm afraid to leave my job due to this for a new o ne.

I remember your other recent thread about potentially leaving the army.

Maybe it would be a good idea to look at another old thread where they showed people and salaries - you posted there in 2014 and seemed pretty shocked at how well your army salary compared to others in civvie street.

Really, the average salary will have little real meaning as an individual will achieve whatever his skills, experience, job ethos, geography and market forces dictate.

I'm in St. Albans - average salary is £43.5k (http://www.theguardian.com/money/2009/apr/20/regional-variation-tax). House prices are fairly stupid and I don't know how you'd move here without a very high household income.

London is apparently £34.5k average, while at the bottom of the table is Hull, at £17.3k

It's interesting that the ONS figures show public sector pay more than private.

I guess the problem with private sector is that it covers such a vast range of jobs that it's hard to actually speculate the difference between public and private in your own relevant field.

I know in my field (IT R&D) that private pays much better than public.

I can only guess at the lower end of the field, for example an Admin working for a private company would get paid less than if they were working for a public department.

The average in my town (Burton-upon-Trent) is around £17k for full time workers. Earning in excess of £26k would be considered a good job and you would be more likely to live elsewhere if you earned that much. You wouldn't want to rent a 2 bedroom terraced house for £450 a month on that wage when you could afford a much better home.

Rent's in an area tend to reflect salaries. If rents are high then so are average wages. If rents are low then average wages will also be low.

Not by me they don't I'm on 20K in a job i've been in for 6 years now average rent by me which is 16 miles from my work for a 3 bedroom house is £1300+ for a 1 bedroom flat you are looking at £800+ :( . Average cost of a house is £250K-£300K where I actually live for where I work most houses are 600K+

I would have loved to be on the average public sector salary of £29k in 2013. I reckon you could have counted on the fingers of 1 hand the number of people on or above that figure in the office I worked at.
The problem with the public sector figure is it includes all the fat-cat MPs, heads of councils etc and that hugely skews the figure.

Just because you worked in a low grade office doesn't mean that all offices are low grade. When I was in civil service my office of 100s had a dozen or so below EO. Majority were SEO+

Yes in fairness if you join a part of the army where you get a trade the wage is ok as you go up, although good old uk politics is slowly ruining the pay and benefits. When you say London average is 49k are you talking Jobs requiring the same skills as Jobs in other areas that pay less? Or the jobs are different? I'm assuming two people doi g the same job o e in wales one in London, the London worker would get more, even though they have the Same to offer?

If you go onto the JobCentre website and checkout most of the jobs they're advertising there you'll find they're for the National Minimum Wage. Many people think that is what the average person is paid.
