Santander 123 Joint and part gross interest

Just to let MSE members know that my wife and I have individual Santander 123 accounts and a joint account.

She is registered as a non tax payer in her personal details and this is applied to her individual account.

However, full interest was taken from the new joint account and I sent a secure message to Santander querying this.

Their reply was that the non tax payer must make a request through secure messaging on their online login or via the phone number they give for EACH account set up even if their personal details show they are a non tax payer.

Hope this helps someone

No need for phone call or secure messaging. The non-taxpayer can declare their status via online banking but, as you say, it has to be done for each account separately.
    • Non-taxpayer must log in
    • Select "My Details & Settings" from the top menu (Tab bar)
    • Select "Change Personal Details" from the left side menu
    • Select "Change Tax Status"
    • One of your accounts will be visible in a list box
    • View and/or change the status of this account
    • Select another of your accounts in the list box
    • View and/or change the status of this account
    • Repeat for each account held

    Just following Santander orders!

"I can confirm that each time you open a new account you will need to request that it is registered to receive gross interest, as each account must be registered individually. For joint accounts, both account holders must register individually.

The second account holder will need to contact us using the login details provided to them for the joint account in order to do this. They can do this via this messaging service or by calling us on the number below."

I see how the above also works except that even though there was a select drop down box for the two accounts on the 'change tax status' page, the page immediately jumped back to the account initially selected on login.

I had to go back to the accounts page, select the joint account, then go to the 'change tax status' page, then select from the two accounts in the drop down box and the page would only display if this was the account selected on the accounts page. A slight glitch, but a bit annoying.

However, Santander had already applied the tax status and left a message saying any tax deducted would be refunded by the end of this tax year.
