FINAL UPDATE: I am writing this on El Capitan on the MacBook in question. Reformatted both drives this morning and it has installed a dream!
Cant believe how much quicker this machine is from dropping an SSD in it. I upped it to 4GB of Ram about 2 years ago - now tempted to go 8GB (becoming obsessed!)

Thank you all once again for contributions and help, in particular to Dauphin.

Reading the thread back I look at my posts and feel like if i was an outsider looking in I would advise myself that i shouldn't be changing HDD's with how little i know, however I now feel I could do it again on my own if necessary!

Very pleased to hear you made it! An SSD makes an enormous difference - you are probably glad on reflection that your old hard drive gave up the ghost!

    Yay - nice one!
You are now the expert... :-)
  • Hi guys if you are installing new SSD it always comes blank and requires formating before you can start installing iOS also which requires DVD/CD or new MacBook firmware are capable to connect with internet apple server to download iOS and install .

If you wish to clone SSD it can easily be done by using disk utilities by booting in recovery mode and choosing Retsore . Your Restore disk will be orginal and destination disk with be new SSD it will completely clone your existing HDD to SSD but obiously you need Sata cable connector to connect your NEW SSD to macbook in order to complete clone , any questions feel free to contact

Why revive a thread that is over 2 weeks old and appears to be resolved?

Plus you're confusing OS X with iOS.
