Barclays bank and Barclaycard initial credit card

A few years ago, i got myself into debt on a barclays current account, i defaulted and never paid, but the default ended up showing on my credit card as partly settled. A year ago, i went into the branch to apply for a basic account, and it wouldn't accept me, and the branch manager even tried to over ride the decision but it turned out i was blacklisted from Barclays.

I did a soft search on a barclaycard initial finance at 34.9% apr on their own website and it said i was 9/10 chance of getting approved. Obviously i am waiting on a decision now, do you think i'll get accepted if im blacklisted from Barclays? If not, if it shows my elegibility being 9/10 so is that pretty certain i'll be accepted?

I would not like say you have a good chance of being accepted. My personal experience of Barclays and card is thus: Barclays do have their own internal credit check. This means if you have an account with them, they can see how you use the account and whether or not you paid them when you should have. (they are not too worried about past missed payments if you are now up to date or the balance has cleared).
In my own example I had a Barclaycard initial which had a few payments missed due to financial issues, I subsequently paid off the card and then only used it for large payments. I subsequently set up a Barclays current account as a secondary account. When I was in branch, I saw a leaflet for their Freedom Rewards card. I had a chat with their adviser and applied for that card in branch. I was told then that if you are an existing customer, they will judge you on their experience of you. (obviously you have to meet the criteria re salary).

It might be worth you popping in branch to have a chat with them. I would not rate your chances high of getting a card once they have your details if you apply on line, you might have more chance in branch.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Unless you are already a customer, banks will almost certainly do a credit check to comply with Due Diligence requirements.

I defaulted on a barclaycard in 2009 it was included in my bankruptcy, I applied for a Barclaycard initial last year and was approved. Either their internal checking was poor or they didn't have an issues accepting me again.
  • Ive still not had a responce...

  • I have accounts that have been closed. 1 defaulted but shown as partially settled. The others were closed with a 0 balance. Do they check old accounts?

    Ive never had a barclaycard

My guess is that the eligibility checker probably uses credit bureau data but doesn't fully utilise their own internal data - maybe for existing multiple accounts but possibly not historic ones, that would possibly be a last check they do?

so we can't really know for sure - it might be that your past issues are old enough now, or it might flag when you apply. sorry!

Or the fact that it would have gone off your credit report after 6 years?
