Help please finding a location for a special birthday.

Options
I have a special birthday this year and my OH has offered to take me away for a holiday. He has given me the choice of where to go and we have agreed it will be somewhere in the UK.

I thought about the holidays that I have most enjoyed and these were to St. Brelades Bay in Jersey, Bluestone resort in Wales and to a small spa town in the Auvergne region of France. The common things that I found enjoyable in them were lovely scenery and walking, small towns with interesting shops often selling locally produced items, some visitor attractions and a range of places to eat. Two of the above holidays were in hotels, but I loved being self -catering at Bluestone (the most recent holiday). I would like to find somewhere new which fits the same bill.

Ideally I would like something within roughly four hours drive of Stirling in Central Scotland, but would consider further afield if public transport was good.

I like accommodation that is comfortable and clean and ideally has wifi, but I prefer simplicity over luxury. We are going in April so indoor attractions/ things to do are important in case the weather is poor.

Durham or York would fit the bill, you can get a train direct from Stirling (or you used to) both are lovely

I second York. It has lots of attractions if the weather is poor. A York Pass could work for you - http://www.yorkpass.com/

Lots to see in the countryside around, also. The North York Moors are lovely (Pickering, Goathland, Grosmont etc), and it's not far to Whitby or you could get the train to Scarborough from York.

I'd look at Devon - you can fly into Plymouth and flying would make it more special
