We recently stayed in the YHA near Oxford Street - really really central to everything..
The family rooms are bunk beds so good for older children.
Really good value
have a look...

If arriving via Stansted you could look for accommodation near Liverpool St, where your mainline service will terminate, or you can get a direct coach service with Terravision to the same point.
It's then about ten minutes on the Central line to TCR for the West End and Queens Theatre, hardly worth changing for Leicester Square as no more than ten mins walk from TCR, or use the bus for the last hop.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks everyone for your super helpful replies. I've booked accomodation a couple of minutes walk away from Liverpool St station so we are now all set up and good to go!
Really, really appreciate your help and suggestions everyone, thank you :-)0 -
London is big, walking between places takes time but it is worth it - for instance you could walk down through Bank to the river, and along Embankment to Westminster (Big Ben), then peel off to Shaftesbury Avenue area - but for a taxi home you'll want a Black Can which can take 5 adults0
