Hi all,
could someone Recommend me a Free, Audio Lossless CD ripper that works either under Windows or Linux. Being of my advanced age I couldn't tell the difference between a Triangle or a Flute, nor a French Horn or a silent Fart(except for the difference of Brasso and Eggs in the smell department ).
I have been tasked to help someone to copy their CD's to their NAS so they can stream them within the house...I have obviously stressed that they should not then sell their collection, nor make them available to someone outside of the household/family. My eclectic selection of music doesn't need to be lossless since I am virtually mutt and jeff, but she is much younger and could benefit with fair musical reproduction. Many thanks for any suggestions

Edited: I would also think "lossy" rather than lossless may suffice but I would need her to confirm

  • I liked Banshee on Linux, but I'm stuck on Windows at the moment.

Recently used Exact Audio Copy - http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ - saving the tracks as lossless FLAC files. Unlike VLC, EAC comes with the necessary FLAC codecs built-in. It downloads the track listings, but not the cover art.

I'm happy with it, but would be interested to hear other suggestions.

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is by far the best I've found. It's designed to accurately rip even badly-scratched and unplayable CDs, so you always get a good quality rip.

For lossless audio, FLAC is the way to go.
  • On linux I recently came across 'abcde' which is a useful (cmd-line) wrapper around other tools (which it autodetects) that do the work. (eg cdda database to figure out the track listing, and cdparanoia to actually do the reading, plus whatever encoder you want to use - defaults to ogg, but as above, flac is probably the best format for lossless.)

Exact Audio Copy is always recommended, but you need to figure out how to use it (youtube). An easier one I like also is Fairstars CD Ripper. Both rip to FLAC and are free.

EAC. It's the best, and you only want to do it once, so do it right first time.
  • Looks like EAC then thanks all for the input folks

K3B is my personal choice under Linux.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • Asunder for Linux - does MP3 and FLAC simultaneously if both are required. You'll need to install the Lame and FLAC codecs, but that takes a moment via the software centre.

    EAC or CDex for Windows.

Standard caution: what you propose to do is illegal, despite your caveats and warnings.

I use WinDac, it creates WAV files from your CDs, which you can then convert to MP3 or use to create a new audio CD.
The free version requires user intervention every 20s or so, the paid for version is full auto.
