Failing the probation period

Oddly, I do not consider ignorance of a junk TV programme to be the collapse of civilisation as we know it. Again - now you are calling me a liar and ignorant. Because I happen not to watch a TV show you are clearly smitten with, it is so important to you and UK civilisation. So yes, I am sensitive about being called a liar and ignorant. Since you aren't - back at you?
I'm not remotely engaging with you. It was another poster that said you were a liar. I've been responding to another poster and you keep jumping in to criticise my spelling. It's unusual behaviour.
Although you do start this post by referring to your own ignorance so if anyone is calling you ignorant it's yourself0 -
Even if you don't watch it I find it very surprising that anyone on an Internet forum has never heard of the TV show " The Apprentice". When it's on to its all over the newspapers, Internet, tv, Twitter, Facebook etc. I accept many people don't watch it but everyone will have heard of it.
The alternative if you had never heard of it was the OP was saying he really hates apprentices. That would be odd.
Some posters just get overly sensitive when their own ignorance is recognised (not you the other poster).
Someone stating they hate apprentices or even Apprentices(it could be a typo or bad grammar) wouldn't seem at all odd to myself as I've had 2 daughter's who started their very fruitful careers off as apprentices and I don't get hung up on someone else's English or grammar...
I think everyone must have a touch of the post Christmas blues as there seems to be a greater number than usual of 'Down the pan' threads....0 -

I'm confused. I'm sure you don't mean it but this seems to read like you can see why people hate apprentices as your daughters were apprentices! It doesn't seem flattering on your daughters0 -
It doesn't help the OP at all but as always this thread had disintegrated into irrelevances when posters were arguing over whether the person mentioned was an apprentice or not.
It was quite clear that the OP was referencing the TV show the apprentice and so I brought that up in the hope it would kill the debate and we could get back into the OP's problem.
Of course this turned out to be a forlorn hope where people started posting they had no idea what the apprentice was so I can only assume they don't want the program, the BBC news (which always has it on) or reads a newspaper.
I wouldn't have minded if my 'mistake' regarding the word had invalidated my advice but it didn't! The user who initially criticised me offered nothing to the op. I personally think any criticism should be directed at them...
I'm happy to agree that some people do not watch the apprentice and have no interest in it (so also wouldn't be inclined to read or watch news relating to it). I barely know what its about! Whilst I misunderstood the referencr, it was a reasonable misunderstanding whivh affected nothing.0 -
I watch the show once in a blue moon and the reference sailed straight over my head too.
Frankly I have no idea why the OP is posting. They've done their bit advising of their opinion of their colleague's performance shortcomings. How his or her superiors deal with the matter is nothing to do with them.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I'm a manager and have had the horrible task of ending someone's probation. I always approach concerns first with the employee and see if they need any support or training to perform better. If this doesn't work I make it more formal by setting up a written plan with specific targets/expectations and support to achieve this. I review this with them weekly and if there is no improvement and it is evident they can't do the job, I will end their probation but I always ensure I've given them every chance to succeed first.0

OK back on topic and to sum up.
This person's behaviour is causing me a lot of stress because I spend an inordinate amount of my time managing their sub-standard and inexpert contributions to the projects that I lead. The annoyance factor is a symptom of this and yes they are the subject of a lot of gossip and not just by me because I'm not the only recipient of their incompetence and they are acknowledged by lots of people as being a !!!!!!!' PITA. When it got to the point when I was waking up in the middle of the night worrying about it and dreading going to work I decided it was time to take action - why should I have to suffer? So I've escalated it to the appropriate people and - as someone suggested - I'm stepping back and letting the two managers sort it out.
My posting on this forum is because I am by no means an expert in employment law and I know that some people on here could provide some valuable and constructive comments (you know who you are). The info I was looking for was regarding probation periods and a couple of posters have actually provided some useful info so thank you. My OP was also written on a Friday night at the end of an incredibly long and frustrating week trying to work with this person.

Trying to get someone sacked because they annoy you is loathe some.
You running around asking everyone else if they dislike or are annoyed by this person is probably far more annoying than a newbie settling in. You aren't their manager and you aren't HR so leave them alone and get on with your own job before people start thinking you are jealous or feel threatened by this person with your inappropriate behaviour and you will be the one with your job at risk. You've reported their failures and they can be addressed as their manager (not you) deems appropriate. It is NOT your business to stir up trouble no matter how threatened you feel by this new employee .

Trying to get someone sacked because they annoy you is loathe some Nope. I'm not trying to get them sacked. I've escalated to my manager that they don't have the skills to support my projects. Any sacking decision is way beyond my pay grade.
You running around asking everyone else if they dislike or are annoyed by this person Also not true. When did I say that? I simply commented that other people find this person equally annoying
You aren't their manager and you aren't HR so leave them alone I wish but they are assigned to my projects
you are jealous or feel threatened by this person with your inappropriate behaviour What inappropriate behaviour? Are you walking around behind me all day? I've identified their weaknesses only to my own manager.
You've reported their failures and they can be addressed as their manager (not you) deems appropriate. Finally something you've said that I agree with

OP that is what probationary periods are for to find out if people are actually up to the job, and you quite rightly expressed that in your opinion they are not up to it. I am surprised that your manager hasn't asked for your opinions or that of your team.0
