Personally I wouldn't have thought so, but at the risk of stating the obvious, why not try it and see what happens, what do you have to lose by doing so?

It's common practice in many countries, including Spain, to formally write the surname first, so you can try to politely explain this in the unlikely event of objection by particularly ignorant staff. The complication of depositing a euro denominated cheque (if that's what you have) is likely to be more relevant.

On Thursday when opening a savings account in-branch in Singapore I was asked how I would like my name to appear on the debit card. I requested firstname - mid-initial - surname, but on receiving it ten minutes later from the teller, the system had written the default of surname - firstname - middlename. It was almost closing time (7pm) and we all wanted to go home, so I readily accepted it and expect to have no problems.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • How much is it for? If its a large sum they may query it (which assuming its from an insurance company it will be) but for small amounts they probably would just let it slide. If they do query it an explanation should suffice most tellers.
The other option is to pop it in the machine and it will then probably just sail through.

The machines are checked by members of staff, so cheques dont automatically just sail through.

It shouldn't cause you any issues as long as your surname and initial is on your account and its matches the cheque.

The only order on a cheque that will make a difference is if you have a cheque in your middle name and surname, this would have to be reissued.

  • Some long while ago a cashier kicked up a fuss over a handwritten cheque to me in the form of Christian name, a rather illegible middle initial, Surname.
Apparently the uncertainly over the middle initial was causing the problem - had it not been there at all there would have been no problem

I had to get the wretched cheque re-written by the utterly amazed cheque writer.................
