I reckon it will be a late sixties/seventies tiled hearth. :o

Looks likely there is something as the boxing is out from the gap, our fire place has been removed at home and we could have had hole boxed in but it would have been flush to the wall if we did. As it was we decided to keep the space and just block the chimney off.

A possibility it could be a 50s fireplace, as that what was in the lounge when we moved in.

Funnily enough, we replaced it with a 1904 fireplace, we found in an antiques shop.:)

I have a little guessing game for you!!:D

Tomorrow, I have the builders coming in to renovate one of the bedrooms.
In the bedroom there used to be a fireplace, which at some stage has been boxed in.
So, when the builders remove the boxing, what will be behind it?

    1) A hole where the fireplace used to be?
    2) A huge pile of soot and muck and half the chimney stack?:eek:
    3) An original cast iron fireplace, from when the house was built in 1904?:j:j

I am so hoping it is number 3, as they are worth quite alot of money and also two more bedrooms have similar boxed in fireplaces, only somewhat larger.:):)

As soon as the builders remove the boxing tomorrow, I will post a photo of what is there!

    Before removal.

Squigs I think it will be a cast iron original fireplace by the size of the boxing in ...how exciting.will you leave it in situ if it is or are you intending disposing off it:(

Just be clear with them if it is option 3 how you want hem to proceed. Normally clearing site is part of the job and you don't want them disposing of anything valuable :).

The builders are well aware that I am very excited about what may be behind the boxing!:)

They have done alot of work on the house, so I know them well.

the reason its boxed out is because something is normally left in situ. Mine had a old back boiler

I hope you are right Nanny!:)

If it is, I will sell it, because I am trying to get the house to a stage where it is easy to maintain and will be easy to sell in the future, so everything is being kept plain and simple.
