New House

I am moving into my first house soon and I am unsure how I go about setting up for gas and electricity. Do I just find a good deal and phone from there? The house also has the prepayment metre for electric and I would prefer to pay this monthly direct debit. How do I go about setting all this up? Do I need to know the current home owners supplier and go from there? Or as she is cancelling it for when we move in does this not matter and I can just pick somewhere and arrange it to begin for my move in date? The current home owners pay their gas monthly and electric prepayments.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

On the first day (ownership or tenancy) you need to read the meters and contact the current supplier to set up an account. After that you can change supplier.

Seeing as how you have an electric prepayment meter you not on a "good deal " and will not be until you have got over the hurdle of an exchange for a credit meter. You are fixed on the suppliers ( usually ) most expensive tariff , known as " standard or standard /variable " Register with the supplier providing meter readings and date you took over the property, not when you moved in.. The electric meter reading is on screen "G " ( total kwhrs since meter installed ) . There may well be debts on this meter so you need to get a key registered in your name to wipe off any debts from last occupier. As a check have a look on screens "S " and " T " which will show debt/ repay rate. These screens need the key inserted to see this info. There is a weekly standing charge of approx £1.80 or so which is taken off once a week so there may be a build up of standing charge debt on screen " A ". You are stuck with the high tariff of a prepay meter until you get an exchange. You will be credit checked .Some suppliers charge the earth for an exchange ( Scot Power is over £200 ) some will do it for free.

You will be in a deemed contract with the existing supplier.
