Wrong Velux Windows Fitted Causing Damp

Morning all,

A friend of mine had an extension on their house approved by building control some 5 years ago which included velux windows in the roof.

Some damp has developed in recent months so they got it checked out this week where it transpires the wrong type of window had been installed!! This is what's caused water to seep in and cause the damp.

What recourse do they have? The company who originally supplied the windows has gone bust.

Is this something that Citizens Advice can give guidance on, or would home insurance be an option?

Thanks for any guidance you can give!!

When you say the "wrong type of window" was installed, do you mean they didn't match what was in the documentation (specification, invoice etc.) or do you mean that what was specified was unsuitable for the intended application?

Who specified what windows should be used, and did the company install the specified windows?

Unfortunately if the fault is with the suppliers (who have ceased trading) there will be little that can be done. Home insurance won't cover this as it's an inherent defect.

The original company's insurance may cover against this depending on the cover they had...I have no idea where you would get this information from now as the original customer would have needed to get it when the works were done.

As Casper_g says in what way has the wrong window been used. Seems strange it has only just started leaking.

Sounds like bs? wrong type installed generally it will leak within days, weeks, mths, a lot sooner than 5 years very unlikely any recourse unless specific type were specced and not installed that’s different matter leaking or not and if they have gone bust little to no chance unless there covered by manufacture warranty ( specific installer schemes etc )

How were the windows paid for? If credit card the credit card company is liable under section 75.

Velux currently offer a 10-year warranty on windows (don't know what they were offering 5 years ago), so contact Velux if it does transpire that it isn't an installation/specification issue.

Whatever the cause of the problem, Velux windows should't leak after just 5 years (or ever, really).

I think the other question to ask here... WHO gave them advise that its the wrong window type? What have they suggested to fix?
