Well, why is this the case for downgrading only?
'Upgrade' option is available online, and I don't see any reasons why downgrading has to be more complicated.

The only purpose of visit to a branch when closing is to sell you some other account/product.

Did you miss the "As far as I know ..." bit?

Upgrading yes but I can't find anything on the Santander website which provides info on downgrading.

Do you have a link from the Santander website which supports what you say? I've already provided a link which supports what I say.

Why such a big jump - I mean why not increase it in increments of say £1 every year or 2...no-one (or rather..most people) would hardly even notice. The CC is only increasing by £1 and I'm happy enough with that.

    Strange marketing ploy...

Maybe the increase in account fee was part of their grand plan to make people jump ship rather than pay out interest on thousands of accounts that only have a few grand in them. I am lucky enough to have 20k in my 123 account so i will be staying my cashback is just over £5 per month :)

The fact that you can't find anything on the Santander website about downgrading doesn't mean it isn't there, or that your theory about the need to go to a Branch to get a downgrade done and that people can't expect it to be done instantly. As numbers123 reports, it can all be done in a 15 minute phone call. If you google a bit, you will find similar accounts from other people.

Aside from that, the Santander website confirms that you can change the 123 on the phone:
If you feel your account is no longer right for you
    It's easy to transfer to another Santander bank account, and we have the following for you to consider;

The Everyday Current Account - this has all the essentials you need to manage your money. It doesn’t offer cashback or interest on your balance and has no monthly fee.
The Choice Current Account - this is designed to help avoid Unarranged Overdraft Fees. It doesn’t offer cashback or interest on your balance and has a monthly fee of £10.

If you'd like to transfer to one of the above accounts, please visit your local branch or call us on the number below.

So where is the evidence that what you say is true? Does that mean that you found the info on the Santander website? Links please.

You seem to have a rather serious reading problem. May I suggest you read post #14 in full.

I can confirm you can downgrade over the phone and it takes few mins as they read out the terms and so on all over again. It is done immediately.

I did it myself last week. Believe it or not if you want but it is true.
  • I downgraded to an 'everyday' account and did it over the phone. However, they took me through an entirely new application, not just T&Cs, which I wasn't expecting (although I was accepted!). I made a request online but was told I had to phone.

I think in due course probably everyone will have done it themselves last week. Hey call me cynical if you must and you would be correct.
