Im an Operating Department Practice student on an NHS bursary and no, you don't get any extra help. I believe its only diploma students who can't get a student loan so im guessing you fall into that category. Unless you are aged 26 or over or have dependents there is no additional help available. My uni do quite a few open days, etc where they pay students to promote the university. I also do mystery shopping and paid surveys (esp those paying amazon vouchers). It's hard though, a lot of my friends have jobs but now we have to train 37 hours a week and write essays on top a part time job just isn't feasible.
  • Although you can't get a student loan, you can apply for the Access to Learning Fund if you require additional funding. The NHS also have a hardship fund. However, these funds are for students who are struggling financially and they're not just given out to everyone who asks for them.

You need to remember that as an NHS funded student on non-income assessed bursary, you will be getting a lot more than other students either on the income assessed bursary and reduced loan, or on the normal student finance for non-NHS students AND you don't have to pay any of it back, or pay fees!:T
  • Hey i am doing a nhs degree course. due to having the bursery you should be entitled to non means tested loan which is approx £2210 per year (which is paid in 3 installments) hope that helps

What about doing bank shifts as a CSW, many students in my workplace do it.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • When I was a student nurse (I finished my training last year) I used to work bank shifts as a CSW to help me though my training, as it was the only way I could do it, I'm still in loads of debt but I"m working now to pay it off.
Total debt £13318  paid £5660 Left to pay £7658 57%

I agree, bank shifts are your answer. I probably do 2-3 a month to tide me over on top of my bursary, more occasionally depending on what the workload is like.

At times you get loads at others not as much. It is useful and relevant to your practical work and you get paid. However word of caution there comes a time when you have to put your studies (in my case more the placement side - I can cope with doing extra shifts when I'm in block) ahead of bank work and turn down shifts. I ended up doing something like 13 days in a row (some placement, some bank) and I was exhausted by the end of it.
