Oven element heating up and smoking

Recently changed a oven heating element that was smoking, the new one was fine for a while but now it's not heating up sometimes or smoking quite a bit. Seems t be a bit sporadic, is it the element or the oven itself?
2p off is still 2p off!

Worth saying the oven is quite old. I've contacted the parts supplier and he's not had any issues.2p off is still 2p off!0

I would suggest its either something on the element that is burning off (cooking oil / grease / cleaning product) or the thermostat is not working so the oven is not regulating properly.
The smoke could be the element heating up full whack without switching off and when its not working maybe the thermostat is cutting out too soon?
Hope this helps you narrow it down.0 -
Thanks. Sounds more like it's a thermostat issue then, rather than the element2p off is still 2p off!0

Is it worth bothering with changing the thermostat or shall I just get a new oven?2p off is still 2p off!0

I bought an oven thermometer off ebay to diagnose our oven. It showed that the main thermostat wasn't accurate and the oven was heating up to 250C. New thermostat sorted it out.0

https://www.google.co.uk/searchq=oven+thermocouple&biw=1185&bih=755&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwj147u8wpzKAhWJXhoKHVs5BZQQ_AUIBygC&dpr=1.35#tbm=isch&q=electric+oven+thermocouple
and you will see that you need the thermocouple (the bit that actually goes inside the oven cavity) and/or the thermostat (the bit that takes the signal from the thermocouple and does the switching) and it could be either that is faulty. You can check the thermocouple with a multi-meter before buying either or both.0
