I can really recommend Streatfeild's adult novels too. They're not that easy to get hold of but Persephone have republished 'Saplings', which is a really moving story about a family during WW2.
Thanks, have just ordered this from the library, love her books, and have ordered loads since reading this thread.Carolbee0 -
Just finished a biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. It was a brick so was expecting it to be quite dry but it was unexpectedly funny.
Next a couple of Rainbow Lowell books- 'Carry On' and 'Fangirl'.0 -
Following the sad news of Margaret Forster's death earlier this week, I've just re-read 'Hidden Lives', which is a biography and autobiography of herself, her mother and her grandmother. It's a really interesting book, which looks at how women's lives and prospects changed over the twentieth century by looking at the lives of 'ordinary' women - from her grandmother, who worked as a servant to Margaret herself, who got into Grammar school and won a scholarship to Oxford. I've enjoyed her novels too - I recently read 'The Memory Box' and 'The Diary of an Ordinary Woman' and liked both - but I think 'Hidden Lives' is my favourite. She wrote a similar book about her father ('Precious Lives'), but I found that a much sadder read.0

Recently finished: 1) Make Me....the latest Jack Reacher novel, enjoyed it but it's getting a bit formulaic now - you know he's going to win and stay alive!
2) The House on Cold Hill ... Peter James. One of his ghost story books, a good escapist read.
Now half way through "Friends of the Dusk", the latest Merrily Watkins book by Phil Rickman.
At the end of that, between Peter James and Phil Rickman I shall probably need my own Deliverance minister!!!Normal people worry me.0 -
Although these are old and not all fiction, I want to throw in this source of so-called great books.

I've just finished The Ghost Riders of Ordebec by Fred Vargas and I really enjoyed it but didn't realise when I picked it up its the most recent in a series so I now have a list to order from the library.
It's about a French commissaire Adamsberg and his squad of policemen who all have some kind of quirk. There's three crimes running through this book, a series of deaths in a small village that were foretold by a young woman, the murder of an older man in his car and the tying together of a pigeons feet....yes really!
I'm away to start a Phil Rickman Merrily Watkins book, thanks for mentioning them Hobson.konMarie and fabbing all the way

Oh yes, I read one of those years ago, but I had forgotten the name and that reminded me.:)0 -
I have just finished reading The Song of Silver Frond by Catherine Lim, which was a very absorbing read.
It is a beautifully written tale of forbidden love that gives the reader a fascinating insight into Singapore culture.0
