If you took part in the collective switch to BG please read below and check your first invoice from BG as they could be charging you at their very high standard rate for some or all of your energy usage.
I operate my sisters energy accounts on line for her and having just input her meter readings on the BG website, covering a 48 day period they said she had used £314.83 worth of energy but my spread sheet recons she has used only £226.75 worth of energy (this may be a few pence out as I do not know the exact CV of the gas supplied). This is a difference of +£88.08. On checking the discrepancy with BG on the telephone (it took about 50 minutes) and only after I queried what tariffs they were using to work out their figures it transpired that she was being charged at the proper rate for her electricity, but the gas was being charged at the BG standard rate which is very expensive. It would appear that her gas and electric had been switched to the collective tariff on the 11th Dec, but the gas had then been immediately switched to the BG standard rate. I am very concerned that this could have happened to others and particularly concerned for elderly possibly non computer literate customers who could get quite a shock when they are invoiced (possibly at the wrong rate) for energy used. A grossly inflated figure could encourage some to cut back on their home heating during this winter period.
