^^ This spy stuff in Windows 7/8/10, it bypasses the hosts file. You'd have to block those addresses in your routers firewall.

If things carry on this way I think I'll need to start growing a beard and go shopping for some sandals :(
  • I haven't even upgraded to Windows 10 because of all the negative things that I've been reading. Nor am I planning to upgrade anytime soon.
Is there something really special that I'm missing out by not upgrading?

Not that I can see. I've just "upgraded" an old spare laptop, out of curiosity. It looks ugly - chunky and clunky. Plenty of stuff running in the background, which doesn't help speed-wise. I've turned off everything I can find, though most settings are hidden. It just seems to be a dumbing-down exercise, which may help the less computer-literate. Can't see anything that I would gain by moving to Win 10 on my main PC.

If you aren't finding it faster than W7 then there is something wrong with your install.
The settings are not hidden, they are just in a different place than you are used to.
If you can't see anything you would gain, then you probably won't.

W10 undoes a lot of the damage the Metro interface caused in W8.x, and provides some stability etc enhancements from W7, plus introduces a more robust patching model to keep you current. Not really bothered about the tracking data seeing as loads of people will fire up a copy of Chrome to surf Facebook, both of which are significantly creepier.

I think since XP most of the manual adjustments I've made to the succeeding versions of Windows have been to turn off automated features which Microsoft introduced and turned on by default.

Have found W10 a lot faster. Turned to off most of the privacy functions, so just check every now and again if any have been re-activated. Overall it works very well.

They come back with the improved stability quote every time, I used to have windows 98 running for months without a reboot and no issues.

Windows ME on the otherhand was a little buggy, After a while your icons went greyscale instead of colour. You knew it was time for a reboot then.

XP was great, and windows 7 runs forever without a reboot.

The only time i had windows 7 crash was when a memory stick made contact with the CPU heatsink. The stick of RAM had a slick bend in it due to the contact. Removed it which dropped the RAM down to 6GB instead of 8 and no more issues. And this is a 9 year old AMD 64 X2 5200 machine.
