I posted the other day about trying to get ear drops into my cat. Her problem paersisted and I took her to the vet on Tuesday afternoon. The vet gave her two injections one of DEXAFORT and one of BETAMOX.

My question is regarding the dosage of DEXAFORT.

Has anybody had this prescribed for a cat and what was the dosage given?

I have looked online and it appears the dosage should be .5 ml/10kg

On the receipt I have from the vet the dosage says 50ml.

Pepe is very poorly I took her back to the vet this morning and he gave her two tablets of antibiotics. She has a temprature but he couldn't say what the problem actually was. I want to make sure that she has not been given an overdose.

Ring the vets to clarify asap!

The vet asked me to ring this afternoon to tell him how pepe is. He is an independant and works alone so I don't want to mithering him when he likely to be busy.

I don't think there is any immediate danger, she had the jab on tuesday afternoon and although I thought last night that she might pass away, after the visit to the vet this morning she is actually up and wandering around although very subdued. I will give him a ring after midday and ask about the dosage then. Thank you for your reply.

Have just spoken to the vet and I was wrong. The receipt shows...

    0.15 Inject Dexafort £5.20
    ........50ml

Apparently she has had .15 from a 50ml bottle.

At least I'm glad I cleared that up. I thought the 0.15 was an item reference.

    Update.

It looks like Pepe has turned a corner. This morning she is more alert, moving more freely, and grooming herself again she's also more tolerant of the attention I want to give her. She's at the vets again this morning to have her temperature taken and hopefully will soon be back to her usual self.

It is indeed and although she is recovering from the medication she was given - I'm convinced it was the medication that knocked her sideways - the underlying problem still persists. I've spoken to the vet this morning and he suggests that as she is improving he doesn't feel it necessary to bring her in this morning but to give him a ring this afternoon with an update. I did tell him there was new grazing above the eye and that I had not seen her scratching although I had seen her cleaning that side of her face and wondered if the grazing was a result of a sharp claw. he was dismissive of the idea as he had cut her claws when I first took her to him but I'm not convinced. The steroids he gave her are active for seven days so I suspect that he want them to run their course before doing anything else.

Thank you everyone for your interest and I will update when she is fully recovered.

    An update as promised.

Pepe has at last fully recovered from the effects of the drugs she was given and the original problem has been cleared up. She's mithering the life out of me wanting to play all the time and following me around the house shoving her nose into everything I'm doing. I really never ever want to go through another ten days like the last. My avatar pic of her was taken this morning.

She has also recovered just in time because on Saturday we will have another addition to the family as Poppy is coming to live with us.

Poppy had come back to the shelter after having been fostered along with her three kittens until they were weaned. She's a lovely British short haired, smokey grey with a white blaze on her chest.

I'll post the trials and tribulations of their introduction, hopefully there won't be too many.

Introductions have been made and it wasn't as bad as I expected. My niece took me to pick up Poppy and came in for a brew when we got home. Pepe being Pepe as soon as she hears a stranger coming in her first instinct is to hide behind the sofa, she would much rather get to the bedroom but that would mean passing the stranger so the sofa will have to do for now. I was first into the room and I put the carrier with Poppy in it on the floor. Pepe saw Poppy but before I could see a reaction from her my niece came into the room and Pepe shot passed her legs and under the duvet on my bed.

I opened the carrier and Poppy stepped out with all the confidence in the world and spent the next half hour exploring her new surroundings with plenty of breaks for ear scratching from my niece and myself. My niece left and that was the cue for Pepe to put in an appearance, I was in the kitchen doing myself something to eat so didn't see their immediate reaction to each other as the first I was aware they had come face to face was when I heard growling from the living room. I looked in and Pepe was in a defensive position and doing the growling, with Poppy about a foot away just sat looking at her, not in the least bit fazed.

I carried on preparing my food and when I came back to the living room both cats had left the room. I settled down on the forum and after about a half hour I hear growling again so I go and investigate. Pepe is sat in the bedroom doorway growling and in front of her Poppy looking at her as if to say "what's up with you you silly !!!!" I left them to it. Poppy came back into the living room and as I discovered shortly afterwards Pepe had taken up a position on my bedside table in the furthest corner of the room and Poppy spent the rest of the afternoon asleep on my lap.

Over the next hour I kept checking on Pepe and she showed no signs of wanting to come out of the bedroom at all and felt guilty that she was having her nose shoved out. I decided to put Poppy in the end bedroom and fetch Pepe from my room to the living room. She had a very wary look around and then went and hid behind the sofa, I let Poppy out of the bedroom and she came into the living room and saw Pepe behind the sofa, they spent about ten minutes looking at each other and then Poppy jumped up on the sofa and promptly fell asleep.

They've been like this for a couple of hours with Pepe still hiding behind the sofa and that's as they are as I'm typing this. My only concern is that neither cat has eaten a great deal in fact probably only a mouthful each.

I'm wondering what to do about bedtime. I'm thinking of keeping Poppy out of my room overnight to give Pepe an easier night stress wise, obviously I will bring in her food, water and litter tray.

I would appreciate any suggestions and if you have got this far through my ramblings then thank you very much.

    Morning,

When I ended up with my third foster (who became perm as I seem never able to get the giving back bit) I went through this.

My first two (Mischief and Trouble) came together. Not siblings, but they were very young so the shelter bundled them in with each other. This was my first real experience of introducing adult (juvenile) cats to each other. I was terrified.

It took about three days. As you say, the personalities will out.

I brought the carry case in, and left it for about half an hour on the floor with me sat in the room. Dexter stayed completely silent, watching everything, and the girls ignored it for the most part. They're all used to me bringing things in that smell of other cats.

    So I opened the cage...

My little boy (Dexter - the newcomer) loves everyone. He bounced over to my girls. Typical teenager, full in the knowledge he's absolutely gorgeous. Was very, very confused when he got a paw to the head. I'm fairly sure he'd never been rejected before (hand reared) and he must have thought there'd been some dreadful misunderstanding...

He sat back on his haunches, went 'mewp', tried to figure out what had happened.

All the while Trouble (the grouchy lady) was in full defensive wild-cat pose, hunched sideways, growling, paw half raised.

Dexter gives the paw a tentative sniff, I swear Trouble levitates sideways and makes the most awful sound - sometimes I think her paw must have been chopped off the noise she can make.

Dexter falls over sideways. Not in attack mode I don't think. I honestly think at this stage he thought she was playing.

I come over and dexter bats at my hand for a tickle (I was in love already). Trouble takes this opportunity to flee!

Missy has been watching the whole thing, and with me there decides to investigate. Dexter keeps trying to get to her, but Missy steadfastly keeps me in the middle (think ring a roses). Missy sniffs every bit of me Dexter has touched, Dexter keeps trying to sniff Missy. I distract Missy with food (always works) and Dexter manages to catch her tail. Missy notices, flicks her tail quite pointedly in Dexters face, and bolts out of the room - right into Trouble (who no-one noticed was peering around the door), who promptly yowls loud enough to set the neighbours dog off, then bolts after Missy.

I remember how to breathe and laugh at the same time, sit up (I fell over during the laughing bit) and find Dexter looking at me from the edge of the sofa with that perplexed look I so love.

    - first hour

After that, I mostly ignored them. Anyone who wanted a tickle got a tickle. If they didn't want to share food they waited until the other finished. I did get an extra litter tray, and luckily I've three chairs in the lounge. More scratching posts. I didn't keep any doors shut, or designate 'safe' spaces.

One thing that did work was scenting them all. I was making some little sent bags and Dexter was playing with my lavender plants (fresh lavender is fine for cats, but don't use oils). He stank! So I rubbed my hands through the lavender and rubbed over the other two. I also put some sprigs in their beds and rubbed over the edges they liked to rub against. I did notice quite a change in the volume of noise coming from trouble that weekend - though, it could have been disgust.

It's been about a year, and Trouble still sometimes gets that 'oh, it's you' look on her face. Dexter is still as vain as ever - but he is beautiful, and Missy still occasionally thinks he's fascinating (normally when he's been somewhere he shouldn't have been).

I'm not sure their base personalities will ever change that much. Dexter would rub his face over a snarling rottie, Missy likes to investigate everything but isn't so big on being touched, and trouble would love to be the only cat of a retired lady that didnt go out much.

    We're an odd little family...
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Pepe has spent all day in the bedroom on top of the wardrobe and when Poppy wanders in Pepe growls at her constantly until she leaves. It's hard seeing Pepe so upset and poppy so confused but hopefully it won't be too long till Pepe ventures out.

Just when I thought we were making progress.....
Pepe did venture out of the bedroom and came into the living room where Poppy is. Pepe had a look at her from the doorway gave a low growl and left again, about ten minutes later she came back in and this time into the middle of the room at which point Poppy jumped off her bed and chased her out of the room and back in again, I've had to separate themfor the time being.

    Sigh...
