Boiler broken - how to look after house till fixed?

  • If you are worried about the heating pipes freezing up, there is one thing that you can may be able to do that will help.
If your boiler still has an electricity supply to the controls and the pipework hasn't been disconnected, turn the thermostat up so that the central heating pump is operating (the pump will often run even if the boiler itself isn't lit up) and make sure that your heating controls are set to heating and hot water.

This will cause the flow of water to go through both the radiators and the heat exchanger inside your hot water cylinder and if your immersion heater is on and the water hot, some of the heat will transfer to the water going through the exchanger. (not a lot but enough to stop it from freezing in the coldest parts of the house).

This certainly isn't an energy saving scenario but if you only do it occasionally to warm the water slightly, it probably won't cost too much.
