Figuring out if I can get duty free....

Hi all,
On monday I'm flying Brisbane-Sydney-Singapore-London-Manchester. I've been searching Qantas and the BAA websites, and seem to see that there's no way I can buy any duty free... since I don't have access to my case between brisbane and manchester, yet can't fly with more than 100ml of liquids between london and manchester. Can anyone confirm this for me? Would hate to buy some alcohol and have it confiscated.

Well the BAA website seems to confirm that you can't:

What about liquids if I am connecting from the EU?
If you are arriving from the EU, you can fly with all liquids purchased from your originating airport or on board your inbound flight, providing you have proof of purchase and the item was bought less than 24 hours previously.

What about liquids if I am connecting from outside of the EU?

If you are arriving from outside of the EU all liquids must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml capacity. They must be placed in one transparent re-sealable transparent bag, no larger than 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") in size, and fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be fastened closed.

Sounds like littlereddevil slipped through the net or encountered an official who though Dubai was in the EU. So you may be lucky - I wouldn't count on it.

Going back to Oz you will not get any duty free unless you can buy it on arrival.

Yes you can. When they confiscated mine, they said the duty free shop should have heat sealed the clear carrier bag with the receipt visible inside and then it would have been ok.

I am so pleased with the millions spent on airport security, a heat sealed plastic bag is deemed adequate security against a determined bomber !!!

Its a complete nuisance for us law abiding travelers but sooo foolproof eh ?

Manchester Airport T1 now has a duty free shop after luggage collection.

Well, thanks to you all. Still not entirely clear though! Seems like it's one message officially and another in transit. Glad to know there's duty free on arrival now at T1... though I fly into T3!!

Same thing happened to me. I bought duty free at Birmingham on the way to Oz via frankfurt. they took it all away at Frankfurt. i hope they had a good party.

Ask your airline if it is still possible to "gate-check" luggage. This means that you give them a bag at the departure gate and it goes in your checked luggage in the hold, rather than travelling with you in the aeroplane. If it is still an option, you could ensure that you have a stout empty case in your hand luggage when you set off; buy your duty-free goods in (say) Singapore and use your case to check them there; then retrieve them together with the rest of your luggage when you reach your final destination.
