my question is how long will i have to stay in hospital after the op? if everything is ok can i ask to go home after 24 hours? i really dont like hospitals and would much rather recuperate at home where oh will be around to help iykwim. is there a minimum amount of time you have to stay?
thanks
Congratulations on the imminent arrival of your little one!
I had a C-Section in July 2006 and I was in hospital for 3 days. I was probably in a bit longer though due to having an emergency C-Section and having to have a general anaesthetic so you probably won't have to stay in for that long.
As a general rule, I think as soon as you can get up on your own two feet you will be allowed to go home. I forced myself to get up asap so that I could leave but please rememeber that a C-Section is NOT an easy thing and you do definitely need to recover from it and to be honest, it is much easier being in hospital!
I never realised just how much we use our stomach muscles during the course of a day (I couldn't even put my hair in a ponytail at first!) so do give yourself time.
Good luck!0 -
my dd came out 16 days ago. Her baby was born 18 days ago after an emergency c section
Her dh was/is absolutely fantastic re helping and she came on in leaps and bounds after coming home. No doubt it helped that she was fit, healthy and with good muscle tone. I was glad she was out of that hospital environment with numerous visitors to the next bed and no hand washing facilities for visitors0 -
Hi, I believe 3 to 4 nights is the usual sort of time frame. But its not jail! They can't "make" you stay in. I really really hate hospitals. I can't sleep at all there. A hospital stay is a nightmare for me. Unfortunately all my babies have been born by emergency c-section. With the second and third I left less than 24 hours after the op. (with the second I had to sign a form saying I was discharging myself against medical advice, but no one seemed to care with the 3rd!) This time, if I'm unlucky enough to have another section I plan to leave as soon as all the drains and drips and things are out. Obviously you can't just go home and carry on as normal. It is major surgery. It takes quite a while to recover from. I find recovery is much easier at home in your own bed rather than in a hospital.
Good luck with your new arrival!0 -

i had a section,2002, nhs. i was given a private room anyway, all the caesar-mums were. the first night you're on a ward so they can monitor you but the next day you go into a room
i got dh to bring food in for me as the food was inedible (and i'm not fussy)

Hi,
I had a section in March this year I had it under general anaesthetic and babes was born 4pm on the friday I had a morphine drip for pain initially and it was taken off at 7am Saturday morning when I was also up and walking around.
I hate hospital and couldnt wait to get out I asked on Sunday after a very restless saturday night (was out of it friday) where I was crying because my baby was crying all night.
Anyhow they let me go on the Sunday at about 1pm as I had to wait for a one of those anti- clotting injections and some diclofenac to take home my bp and iron levels were all ok before they allowed me to go.
I have to admit I was much better off at home but could easily have stayed in hospital if it was quieter as someone above said there is always some one on the phone people talking loudly and babies crying that are not your own.
I also had a supportive hubby when at home.
Good luck for the birth

Hi, I too being a MW will say the minimum stay is 3 days (not counting op day), please do remember, as others have already stated, this is major abdominal surgery. Your body can take upto a year to rectify the changes made from pregnancy when delivering normally, never mind following a C/S, so please do take the advice of your MW (even if you think she/he may be talking a load of drivel). Do take advantage of help offered, people only offer once. Most of all enjoy your baby while you can.

Wow, I had a planned section just over 5 weeks ago and I walked out the door as my son turned 48 hours old! I didn't beg them to let me go early and I'm sure if I'd felt the need I could have stayed longer but when the midwife said 48 hours was the earliest I could leave we just planned to go then. I also had a private room throughout - talk about postcode lottery!
Because I had the op in the afternoon I wasn't helped up to the shower until the next morning. Once you're up and moving the pain is less - a lot of it for me was the stiffness of lying still for so long. I also had a spinal anaesthetic with morphine mixed in it which was really good - once that wore off I had co-codamol and that was it, but I didn't need more. Home was much better because I hated buzzing the midwives to help every time my baby needed changed/fed, so I did a lot of struggling in and out of bed. Once I was out I could get DP to run and fetch for me!
I think it depends hugely on the hospital and also how you feel in yourself after the op, but if you feel strongly about not staying for too long then talk to the staff beforehand. Good luck!0
