Google Chromecast blew up

I wasnt home but the mrs said yesterday the Google Chromecast plugged into our TV 'popped' yesterday, took out the trip in the consumer unit for the downstairs socket circuit and there was a burning smell. When I checked through, 'HDMI 2' port wasnt showing on the TV so traced it to the Chromecast, unplugged it and the mains plug smelt of burning, so have removed it. Is this a common fault? And any ideas why it would of happened please?

So, what happened actually? The unit 'blew up' or some 'mains plug'?

And it would be some AC/DC power supply, not just 'plug'. If it smells, then the power supply seems to 'blew up', not Google Chromecast.

Surely it's not a common fault, but can happen with any power supply.
Is it not just an ordinary USB power supply that can be easily replaced to check?

Try a second bit that plugs into the mains, android phones come with 1 or they used to.

but why has the HDMI port disappeared with the unit plugged in , unplugging the power lead from a chromecast does not disable a HDMI port?

Sorry people, should of been more specific (i blame the 4am start today), the 3 pin plug itself, which has a USB port on it.

That's the power supply. As was already said power supplies can and do fail.

This shouldn't screw up your TV HDMI port and probably not the Chromcast either. Do you not have a mobile phone charger that will fit so you can test to see if just buying a new PSU will sort out the problem.

If you still have the receipt and it's inside a year you should ask for a replacement on warranty.

There's an awful lot of very dodgy cheap and nasty Chinese ones around unfortunately. The difficulty is in sorting the good from the bad. Price is often a clue although not conclusive, as is buying from a trusted source. Good job you didn't have a fire.

Perhaps he has a TV like mine where the various input ports are greyed out unless a live feed is attached to them. So if the Chromecast isn't getting juice the HDMI port doesn't see it in the on-screen menu.

I wondered about that. Getting stuff fixed after a year can often lead to a fight so I put one year instead. TBH I've got so many 5v USB chargers now I wouldn't bother at all and just use a different one. in fact my chromecast lead gets plugged into the USB connector on the TV.

Where did you get the mains adaptor from? The Chromecast doesn't come supplied with one (if I recall correctly), just a USB lead.

Mine gets powered from USB on the telly.
