MS90 Conviction and Car Insurance
Hey guys,
Long story short I forgot to update my logbook when moving, and got stuck with a MS90 for what was originally a minor offence (Speeding). Needless to say - I've lost faith in the justice system because of this ridiculousness. But can't do anything about it now.
This has doubled my car insurance and my current provider (Diamond) will not renew with me, but have allowed me to see the end of the term out.
It's raised from £500 to ~£950. Just as I turn 25 and get 3 YNC too
(Looking at several comparison sites)
Does anyone have any tips for drivers with MS90 on their licence? Hoping to cut costs a little and I come here a lot for energy/mortgage advice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
James

As soon as you found out about the conviction you should have done a statutory declaration to the court and got the conviction quashed and returned to the summons stage.0

Yes, years ago I had received a NIP, replied to say I was driving, then moved house. Then letters went to my old house and I found out some point later when DVLA wrote to me to say they needed to get my licence to put points on it, that I had been convicted in court of speeding (and, bizarrely, no MOT and no insurance) in my absence. It was a company car so covered by fleet insurance and was not old enough to need an MOT.TadleyBaggie wrote: »As soon as you found out about the conviction you should have done a statutory declaration to the court and got the conviction quashed and returned to the summons stage.
Rather than losing faith in the justice system I simply made a stat dec at my local court to say I was not aware of the proceedings against me and the judgement was cancelled. They never re-prosecuted it.
In terms of having an MS90 on your licence, you might find the best price by going through an old fashioned broker, who will know where to place the business if Diamond and the other Admiral brands don't want it.
Even though the policy may end up being a little more expensive than going direct due to broker fee, it can save you time going through all the different insurers when you don't know what type of business they all like, and potentially some of the comparison sites may not be set up to work with all of their partners with all conviction codes (which was someone else's experience on this forum some years ago).
One broker I've used for one of my cars is Adrian Flux / Fluxdirect who have long been recommended for those with specialist needs (e.g. people who are young with sporty or modified cars).0 -
Thanks - I'll try the brokers next month.
I did a stat dec, had to go to court again, got found guilty & they were not willing to go back to the original offence as over 6 months had passed (which is ridiculous). I've been through the mills with it and explored all options, the stupid thing is some people get out of it, some people don't. Depends on who's judging you on the day... That's why I've lost faith in the justice system.
But cheers- I will try the brokers over the next months.

The difficulty with an MS90 code is that the insurers do not know what the original offence was, it's possible the S172 request was for a serious driving offence that was worth taking the MS90 offence for rather than the original offence despite the relatively high penalty for an MS90.
As above your best option is likely a broker who may know of insurers who are a better choice for this situation.
