Power of Attorny charges.

I'm fortunate enough to have both of my parents alive both in their mid 80's. My mother has early dementia and my father has recently spoken of handing power of attorney over to a solicitor no doubt in case he passes before my mother. The question he's asked me to ask is will he have to pay a one off fee or will there be an annual fee or will they charge a percentage of his estate if power of attorney is passed to a solicitor?

Does she still have capacity?0 -
he'd need to ask the solicitor, they may all have different charging models. One thing is for sure, they will charge handsomely!
You could be an LPA for them and no doubt would gladly do it for nothing? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
The solicitor will charge to produce the document. They will also charge for their time if they ever have to act as attorney.
Why don't you or another family member take on the role?0 -
I agree that it would be better if the attorney wasn't a solicitor. If you, or another relative, agreed to do it then I think it's a one off charge. My parents have just arranged this. My mum is the attorney for my dad, with me as a back-up, and I am an attorney for her. The paperwork was extensive and complex, but she was able to complete it all herself, without the assistance of a solicitor.
If your mum is losing capacity then this should be arranged ASAP, because she has to be aware of what paperwork she is signing.0 -
Thank you all for your prompt and helpfull replies, i will pass the information on to my father.0

It is possible to appoint more than one person to power of attorney if wanted for any reason. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Best and most cost-effective choice would be to ask a responsible and trustworthy member of the family.
There is an online lasting PoA that is available through a gevernment website. You fill in the on-line details, printoff and post.

It costs £110 for a lasting Power of Attorney although there are possible reductions in the case of low income etc.
Might be worth a look before seeing a solicitor0 -

This is the same setup I have with my parents, Mam has LPoA for Dad with me as backup and I have LPoA for Mam. My parents were too nervous to do the forms themselves in case they messed it up so used a solicitor to do the paperwork. It cost in the region of £500-£600 for the whole lot to be completed for both of them and is for financial and medical POA. Not too expensive considering filing it themselves would have been £110 each and not sure if it would be separate payments for the welfare and financial side so either £220 or £440 as a total.0 -
Hi
Reading this thread with interest.
Mum has advanced vascular dementia and pops has had a stroke, got deputy ship for mum and LPA financial and health for dad. Expensive too - £700 for mum and £800 for dad via solicitors.
I only have two questions please. I have a Nationwide POA debit card for pops, his card seems to have been stopped and my card is not accepted for online payments which is a nightmare for our grocery shop. What an earth do I do???!
Also, mortgage company will not speak to me even though sent them LPA and letter from hospital for dad and letter from care home for mum. Getting stressed as dad wants me to pay off mortgage as its rather high - so frustrating. I have sent another LPA via re corded delivery a week ago with solicitors slip and haven't heard. We will struggle to make the £800 a month payments long term. I care for dad and he has visiting carers I just hope they let me pay the mortgage off as he has the funds for mortgage and his care. Been so stressed! I am on a very low income.Clara Sais - Vlogger and Mummy0
