Change Electric meter

Ive moved into a house with an economy 7 meter and a radio teleswitch.
Im with British gas and have asked them to change the meter as 1) i don't want economy 7 and , 2) the meter is over 30 years old and I'm my opinion inaccurate as my bill is £570 for a quarter. ( admittedly a bigger house but still same number of people living there, where my previous house was £100 a quarter)
I rang BG and asked for it to be changed, they won't do it and all they have come up with is to add the day rate and night rate readings together and bill me on the standard rate.
My questions are :
1) how can i get them to change the meter ?
2) If i change to a new supplier will they change it ?
what have others done in this situation ?
Thanks

You'll be contacted when it requires an end of life exchange.
Single rate billing stops the E7 charges. Cheaper if you don't have storage heaters and don't use more energy on a night.
Also if you think the meter is inaccurate then you'll need to request an accuracy test and be ok to pay cost of found accurate. if inaccurate they'll amend the last bill by the % of inaccuracy. However to take a chunk off your billing you'll need it to very inaccurate, not that common. Eg £500 bill 10% inaccurate will only take off £50 and you'll have to pay remaining bill.
Have you check all the electrics for faults, start meter readings for your account, made sure each meter reading compares to the register on meter and is register the right way round, won't matter now but would have mattered on E7. Also speak with the energy efficiency team to help understand the possible household factors which can contribute to your bill.
Just remember if you have a meter exchange it can not be tested and ever amended.0 -
You can have an electrician install a secondary meter after the existing meter (you may need 2, one for each side)
Look for a registered competent companybaldly going on...0 -
If your eco 7 meter has reached its change date then they will simply swap it for another 2 rate digital eco 7 meter. They will not just do as you request and swap to a single rate meter. There will be extra costs in a single rate/eco 7 meter swap.
OP, how do you know if the meter is nt accurate. It could just as well be under recording. For a test you could try the 1 kwhr one bar electric fire on for one hour ( with everything else in the house off ), should use one unit in the hour.If you request a check meter installed and the meter is within tolerance expect to pay at least £65.0 -
Is your bill based on ACTUAL or ESTIMATED readings ?
What tariff are you on ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Basics: why do you want to switch away from E7? How do you heat and hot water the property? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
