wireless and skype

Options
Hello,

I need some idiot-proof advice here... I have just had virgin broadband installed, and need to set up a wireless router for using my laptop downstairs.

I also want to use skype intsead of a landline and have been looking at an adaptor box that lets you use sykpe through your normal phone, and without having the on switched on.

I think i need a wifi router and a phone adaptor.. am I right???

Is this sort of thing right?? http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/52244

Tesco do a phone adaptor for nearly £50, but I believe it doesnt work with skype...

Ebuyer have this but it has mixed reviews (terrible ones recently actually!) http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106506

Also is there a box which would do both jobs?

Any advice gratefully accepted!!

That is a wireless modem/router. Should be ok.
You also need a voip phone adapter which will go between your phone and the router. I have no experience of these things but http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106506
looks like the sort of thing that you are after. If it has bad reviews search around for something that has better ones e.g.

Do Virgin do deals on broadband and phone packages? Could they work out cheaper?
  • cheers:beer:
nah, dont want to pay line rental for the amount of calls I make on my landline - really need the incoming calls facility more, so skype sounds like best bet i think! Will go and look at the other ebuyer link, ta
  • does anyone know if there is one box which will do both jobs?
ie. wireless router and phone adaptor in one?
It would seem logical, but am struggling to find out...

If you don't pay line rental, your Virgin will be cable not ADSL which your link

    is suitable for.

If your Virgin Media is via cable, you would need a Cable/DSL router and your link is for an ADSL router, which is not suitable.

  • ok, this is all a bit beyond me to be honest...
I think virgin is via cable.. the engineer was fiddling with the old diamond cable box anyway!
Which one isnt suitable??? I am confused!
If I get this one - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/52244 is it right, and do I still need a phone adaptor box to be able to use skype through my home phone??
    many thanks,
    fc ;)
