Tomato pest identification needed

My tomatoes are doing well this year but in the last week I have noticed that some of them seem to have large portions eaten out of them. I actually found one with what looked like a tiny black slug inside. I have a pests and diseases gardening book but can't identify this from it.
Can anyone offer help and suggestions.
